5-Legendary-Golf-Swings

In golf, players swings are often as different as snowflakes, and for good reason. Learning to swing “your swing” rather than trying to exactly emulate someone else is truly one of the keys to excellence in this sport, a sentiment The King explains better than we ever could in this recent ad.

That said, while not trying to exactly duplicate another player’s swing, there’s still quite a bit you can learn from watching a few select pros who have mastered (or at least come close) a few of the most important fundamentals.

Study the areas where each of these legendary golf swings excelled and try to incorporate their strengths into your game.

Fred Couples – Tempo

Still think you need to swing “hard” to get the distance you’re after? Freddie proved that what looked like a “slow” swing could generate a ton of power. The keys to watch in Fred’s swing are his impeccable rhythm and the unprecedented amount of lag he generates to power the ball off the tee. Couples’ tempo is so impeccably unwavering that it can lull you to sleep…while he beats the pants off the ball.

Ben Hogan – Ball Striking

Hogan had what was perhaps the prettiest finish in the sport, here’s your evidence. But, what Hogan was perhaps most admired for was his amazing ability to strike the ball solidly every time. Often, other pros would watch Hogan practice on the range, awed just by the sound his clean ball strikes would make, swing after swing.

Let’s let the man himself explain how he did it:

Payne Stewart – Effortlessness

The late Payne Steward embodied the epitome of a smooth golf swing. Stewart had a one of the most natural, effortless, flowing, and smooth swings ever to grace the sport.

To prove the consistency of his smooth tempo, here is every one of Payne Stewart’s shots that aired on the Sunday he won the 1999 U.S. Open:

Adam Scott – Balance and Posture

The recently crowned World No. 1 has what can easily be considered one of the most fundamentally sound swings currently found on the PGA TOUR. Scott’s extremely graceful swing, while appearing completely effortless, displays aspects of near-perfect posture and alignment.

Nick Faldo – Control

As Johnny Miller tells us in this video, 3-time Masters champion Nick Faldo was a player who “knew his limitations,” and became a master of controlling his swing. In golf, one of the most significant keys to consistency is knowing how to control your swing. Study how Faldo played the game and you’ll quickly gain an understanding of this concept.
