Fantasy Golf Picks and Predictions for the 2015 Sony Open (Jan 15 -18, 2015)

This Week’s Tournament Preview

Part two of the Hawaii swing kicks off this week at Waialae Country Club where returning champion Jimmy Walker will be in attendance to defend his title.  Walker comes into the Sony after blowing a lead he held for most of the event, after losing in a playoff to Patrick Reed.  Reed will not be in attendance this week to play at the Sony, so that should make your picks a little easier.

In all, there have been a total of ten Sony Open winners over the last fifteen years who came from the previous week field at Kapalua.  However, the only name to ever win back to back Hawaii events was Ernie Els in 2003, although some others have come awfully close.

This week’s field is much more robust than the small field at Kapalua, with about 140 names in the field versus the 32 who played at Kapalua.  For most, this will be a kickoff event and even further, their first FedExCup event appearance for the 2014-15 season.

We’ll be looking at the spillover from Kapalua to identify who has the hot hand, as well as which players have been a key factor on this course over the years when making our picks this week

Last Week’s Fantasy Results

It was a good week at Kapalua for our fantasy picks with a total of four Top 10 finishers including Walker’s second place finish (a playoff heartbreaker) and a T3 finish from the charging Russell Henley, our fantasy sleeper.  In all we closed the week with a little over $1.6 million in fantasy dollars earned, bumping our season Top 10s picked percentage to almost 30%.

The Field

Defending champion Jimmy Walker will be the headliner this week and will be joined by big names such as Jason Day, Matt Kuchar, Zach Johnson, and Ryan Palmer.  In all, about 24 players from Kapalua will take the short flight up to Waialae this week to hunt down 500 FedExCup points before the West Coast swing kicks in and more big guns start entering the field.

Keep an eye on Charles Howell III this week as he once again returns to Waialae where he has seven impressive top-five finishes but has yet to win the event (T8 last year).  Also worth noting is Webb Simpson who will be making his 2015 debut along with Marc Leishman and Luke Donald.

Some Senior TOUR names like Fred Funk, Davis Love III, and Kenny Perry will also take a crack at it this week, and we’ll even get a chance to see veterans KJ Choi and Vijay Singh back in action.

The Course

Waialae Country Club measures in at 7,044 yards and plays as a par 70.  Most notably, this year marks the 50th anniversary of Waialae playing host to a PGA TOUR event.

The course opened in 1927 in partnership with the the Royal Hawaiian hotel to help attract tourists to the islands.  The course shouldn’t be too tough of a test for the 140 man field, and the lack of much wind in the forecast will also help keep scores down.

In 2013 Russell Henley was able to knock down 26 birdies with only two bogeys to win his first PGA event.  Last year Jimmy Walker put down 22 birdies with only 2 bogeys en route to his 2nd win of the 2013-14 season.

Weather Forecast for Honolulu, Hawaii (from weather.com)

Round 1 could see a small chance of rain, but it’s unlikely.  Temperatures all week will remain constant in the high 70s and it is expected to be cloudy for most of rounds 1-3, after which sunshine will prevail during the closing round on Sunday.  The wind will most likely not be a factor this week but on Sunday we may see gusts hit the 14-15 mph range.  Regardless it will certainly be nothing like the wind we saw at Kapalua.

2014 Results

Incredibly, the 2014 Sony Open was Jimmy Walker’s second win of the wrap-around season over just a six start span.  Walker emerged victorious from a four-man dogfight after sinking three consecutive birdies on the back nine to finish with a 7-under 63.  Jimmy originally tied for the lead after draining a 15-footer on the 15th hole, eventually surpassing Harris English after the Georgia Bulldog failed to convert a crucial par.  Walker’s lead was momentarily challenged when Chris Kirk missed a 30-foot eagle chip by inches to finish 1 stroke back of Walker (66).

Jimmy Walker came into the event as the first winner in the 2013-2014 wraparound season after taking home the trophy from the Frys.com Open the previous October.

This Week’s Fantasy Notes

This week we’ll see a similar style course to last week’s event at Kapalua, however the numbers show that Waialae plays a little friendlier.  Last year we saw a lot of mid and low 60s carded as players chewed up the picturesque course.

The West Coast swing is fast approaching and with it more and more big names from the Top 25 World Rankings will be returning to action. So this week we did a little extra homework to provide you with some “sleeper” names we think can help you win your league, not break the bank of salary cap leagues, and save some room for the big picks down—for those leagues that only allow you to pick a player 10 times in the year.
