Fantasy Golf Picks, Odds, and Predictions for the 2015 Travelers Championship

The 2015 Travelers Championship Preview

We’re coming off of a huge victory last week with our horse pick Jordan Spieth winning the 2015 U.S. Open in dramatic fashion, but we’ll address that in a moment.

This week the PGA TOUR will head back to an “easier” track as players head back across the country to TPC River Highlands for the 2015 Travelers Championship.  Many of the big names we’re used to seeing will choose to rest this one out following the mental and physical exhaustion that Chambers Bay presented last week.  Interestingly enough, six of the last nine Travelers champs were debut victories including last year’s winner Kevin Streelman, Ken Duke (2013), Marc Leishman (’12), Freddie Jacobsen (’11) and Bubba Watson (’10).

The event will have a full field but will only contain 39 players who from last week’s U.S. Open field—making it even that much more difficult to pick some unknowns to round out your rosters this week.

One quick word of advice…don’t be too quick to bet the farm on Bubba, there are a number of other players who are capable of walking away with the trophy this week.

Last Week’s Fantasy Prediction Results

In last week’s preview, we told our Premium Members to steer clear of McIlroy (and his high price tag) altogether and make Jordan Spieth your “must have” for the big game on DraftKings.  If you headed that advice you’re in good shape as Rory only put up 68 fantasy points to Jordan’s impressive 102.

Thanks to our new Golficity Projected Fantasy Points tool, we had Jordan as a clear favorite with a whopping 113.59 GPFP—and let’s be realistic: you could have only picked one player out of Spieth, Dustin Johnson, and Rory McIlroy this week without breaking the bank as any type of tandem would have left you filling up the other 4 players with amateurs and Senior Tour players.  Our stats, our analysis, and our gus told us to go with Spieth, and that is why we took him as our Horse Pick of the Week.

With the win, Spieth helped us mark our second Major winner this season as we picked him to out-duel the best field in all of golf on biggest stage back in April.  All told we now have eight winners picked on the season (out of 28 events) and well over $1 million in weekly average earnings (per 7 players picked).

The Field

Most players won’t trek coast to coast to attend this week’s 2015 Travelers Championship, which ends up leaving a “thin field.”  A “thin field” is a Golficity term for an event containing just a hand full of studs, a whole bunch of mid-range possibilities, and a fair amount of “nobodies.”  These events get tricky because you really need to know how to navigate through the unknown players that we don’t often hear about.

The studs this week include Bubba Watson (who’s won here before), Sergio Garcia, and Zach Johnson.  In total there will be nine players among the top 30 in the Official Golf World Rankings present at this week’s event.

Don’t count on Jason Day this week either.  Odds are he’ll be taking a leave to figure out some medical issues before reemerging at the British Open next month.

Be careful how you navigate this field because one slip up week could set you back in any pick’em annual league.  But don’t worry, we’ll help you dig deep this week to find the diamonds in the rough.

The Course

This week the TOUR will head back to green grass and flatter putting surfaces as players travel back east to Cromwell, CT.  TPC River Highlands measures in at 6,841 yards and plays as a par 70 (almost a full 1,000 yards less than last week’s competition at Chambers Bay!).

Trees will come back into into play this week in the midst of a humid and hot northeast atmosphere and this beautiful course sits on top of a bluff looking out over the Connecticut River.

The course is scoreable as last year’s winner Kevin Streelman showed us with his Saturday-Sunday 64s.  We’ll be looking at the course stats when making our selections and will offer more insight below in our Fantasy Notes section.

Here’s a look at the drivable par-4 15th at TPC River Highlands:

Weather Forecast for Cromwell, CT

Practice rounds at the beginning of the week will be hot and muggy and should make things fairly uncomfortable for the players.  However, come Thursday the temperatures should drop significantly from the upper 90s to the upper 70s.

Rain is threatening at some point in the early part of the tournament but should be out of sight by the weekend.  There are no major threat for heavy winds this week.

Last Year’s Travelers Championship Results

Last year Kevin Streelman drained seven birdies in a row to finish his round and complete the victory over K.J Choi and Sergio Garcia.  The win marked Streelman’s first victory on the PGA TOUR and his milestone was completed in style.

Streelman one-putted his final 10 holes on Sunday, holding a putting clinic for the gallery at River Highlands on his way to the win.  We are not doing his performance any justice by talking about it; you’ll have to check it out for yourselves:

Where to Play Fantasy Golf this Week

DraftKings will begin promoting their next big million dollar event (for the British Open) pretty soon, but until then you’ll have to go back to some smaller weekly games in hopes for a nice cash prize.

If we had to choose one event this week with the best chances of cashing in, we’d go with this one:

  • PGA $300K DRIVE THE GREEN [$100,000 TO 1ST!]: This event has an attractive $3 dollar entry fee with a tempting $100,000 prize going to first place.  It’s no $3 million dollar event but it will keep us happy for a few weeks until then!

This Week’s Travelers Championship Fantasy Notes

This week our strategy has certainly changed now they we are coming back to a more normal golf course.  Last week we made an effort to dissect almost every course/tournament review we could get our hands on and it paid off big.  This time around we’re more focused on fundamental stats like GIR, Scrambling, Tee-To-Green, and Birdie Average and together with our Golficity Fantasy Predictor we’ve put together a solid roster for salary cap leagues this week.
