The Course:  The Stadium at TPC Scottsdale measures 7,216 yards and plays as a par 71.  Built in 1986 specifically for this event’s move to the Arizona suburbs, TPC Scottsdale is arguably one of easiest Par 71 tracks on the PGA TOUR.  Their signature hole, the par-3 16th, sits in an enclosed arena that holds up to 20,000 spectators at one time.  Tiger Woods knocked in an ACE here in 1997, which is just one of eight at this venue.   Andrew Magee made PGA TOUR history in 2001 when he nailed a hole-in-one on No. 17, which marked the first ACE on a par-4 in TOUR history.

2012 Results: A week after his triple bogey blow up on 18 at Torrey Pines, Kyle Stanley picked up the pieces in Arizona and overcame an eight-shot deficit to beat Spencer Levin on the final day by one stroke.  Stanley went 6-under to finish with a 65 for the round after tooking the lead with a birdie at #14.  Levin put up 75, and really collapsed after a double bogey at the par-5 15th after his drive caught the cart path and nestled up against some Arizona desert cacti.  Ben Crane, who won at Torrey Pines in 2010, finished in 2nd while Levin landed in 3rd.

Top 5 Picks/Odds to Win:

  • Jason Dufner (Golficity Odds: 14/1): Dufner is making his first mainland debut this year after a T18 at Kapalua a few weeks back.   He spent the last couple of weeks in the desert on the European Tour which extended his string of top-20s to 8 straight.  In the last 2 years at TPC Scottsdale, Dufner has two top-10s which includes a solo second in 2011.
  • Brandt Snedeker (Golficity Odds: 14/1):  We’re marking Brandt with the same odds as Dufner this week.  The 2012 FedEx Cup champion fought hard to take a T2 at Torrey Pines last week.   He is a true contender for defending his own title this year.  With continued putting excellence, Snedeker has 2 top-10s and has made 5 out 6 cuts on this track.
  • Nick Watney (Golficity Odds: 16/1):   Although we thought he may give Tiger a run at Torrey Pines last week in the last round, Watney has no one but himself to blame for his collapse.  Other than hitting wedges over the green from under 100 out and missing puts by 5-7 feet, Nick Watney’s golf game is good enough to contend on a course where he has made 5 straight cuts.   Watney finished T5 here in 2011 and posted 3 top-25s at TPC Scottsdale.  He’s breaking in some new equipment, and had a few late struggles as we mentioned, but if you a broader look at four of his Torrey Pines rounds Watney certainly looks to be an emerging competitor this year.
  • Charles Howell (Golficity Odds: 22/1):  Howell kicked off 2013 with a bang, notching a T2 after losing in a playoff at the Humana Challenge and a T3 at the Sony Open in Hawaii.   After coming out of the gate strong, Charles wrapped up at Torrey Pines with a T9 which gives him 3 top-10s in all 3 events he has competed in.
  • Rickie Fowler (Golficity Odds: 25/1): After a disappointing opening round at Torrey Pines last week (77), Rickie found himself in the hunt late in the tournament on Monday.  He’s been a bit inconsistent coming into 2013, but so far this year he looks like a real contender on TOUR.  Rickie is 4 for 4  making the cut at TPC Scottsdale with a solo 2nd place in 2010.

Sleeper Picks/Odds to Win:

  • Brian Gay (Golficity Odds: 50/1):  Already with a 2013 win under his belt at the Humana Challenge, Gay has improved his swing technique this year, adding distance to his drives.  This 4-time PGA TOUR winner has 4 top-25s in his last 6 visits to TPC Scottsdale.
  • Martin Kaymer (Golficity Odds: 50/1):  With his infamous putt to secure victory for the European Ryder Cup team, Martin Kaymer has hit U.S. soil for the first time this year to compete on the PGA TOUR.  The once World Ranked No. 1 player in the world has 6 top-11 finish in his last 7 starts.  We like him as a long shot in Arizona this week.

Last Week’s Predictions Results (The Farmers Insurance Open):

  • Bubba Watson (Golficity Odds: 8/1):  WD due to Illness.
  • Dustin Johnson (Golficity Odds: 12/1):  T51
  • Charles Howell III (Golficity Odds: 15/1):   T9
  • Brandt Snedeker (Golficity Odds: 20/1): T2
  • Tiger Woods (Golficity Odds: 25/1):  WINNER

Last Week’s Sleeper Picks Results:

  • Phil Mickelson (Golficity Odds: 50/1):  T51
  • Scott Stallings (Golficity Odds: 50/1):  Missed Cut
