After an extremely close last day of the DP World Tour Championship, Rory McIlroy has regained his European Tour Champion crown with a one shot victory.

The day was set to have a McIlroy and Sullivan showdown, after the Irishman shot a third round of 65 to become within one shot of leader Andy Sullivan going into the final day in Dubai.

The Englishman lead for most of the day, up until Rory made his most important birdie of the day make it neck and neck at -20, with only five holes left to play.

Luckily for the Irishman, the pair did not stay tied for long, as Rory made back-to-back birdies on the 14th and 15th, which included a 7-footer to stretch his lead to two shots.

After both players parred the 16th, it all came down to the 17th hole, as McIlroy seemed to loose his focus on the par three, where his tee shot ended up in the water.

This gave Sullivan an opportunity to level up the game, where the players would be once again all square going into the last hole.

Unfortunately for the Englishman, he was unable to take advantage of this situation to gain back his two shot deficit, after he only managed to par the hole, and was therefore relying on the Irishman to miss his putt to end the hole with a double-bogey.

After Rory’s arguably worst tee shot of the year, he managed to hole the 30ft putt to make his most important bogey of his 2015 season, to keep a one shot lead going into the final hole of the season.

Both golfers finished the round off with a par, leaving Rory with a one shot victory – where he regained his title of European Tour Champion.

After a year of what can only be described as a rollercoaster for the 29-year-old Irishman, with an ankle injury leaving him unable to compete in numerous tournaments, being victorious at the Jumeirah Golf Estates and also in the Race to Dubai, will have ended his year on a high.

Runner up Andy Sullivan is hoping to be a part of the Europe Ryder Cup team in September, and many players such as Rory are fully supporting him, saying that he would be a great asset to the team.

Now that the season is over, many of the players have a few weeks off, where they will all be going home and also preparing for the season ahead, and for Rory, he will be heading home with the Harry Vardon trophy in his suitcase, along with a seven year European Tour Card exemption.
