Tournament Preview: The 2013 Zurich Classic

Published

on

Unlike last week, the wind should not be factor for the 2013 Zurich Classic, as the TOUR moves south to TPC Louisiana in Westwego, LA.   The course has gone through some recent renovations which include making the signature par-5 18th hole, a little bit easier.

Evidence of a decreased difficulty level on the 18th hole can be seen in its sub-par scoring average of 4.697 for the week  Back in 2011 the hole averaged an all-time high of 5.004 and allowed only three eagles and 97 birdies while in 2012, play on the 18th hole resulted in 12 eagles and 189 birdies.

Another significant change was made at the par-4 13th hole which at one time was drivable but was recently lengthened by 26 yards to avoid the congestion that built up on the course.

Measuring 7,425 yards, the track at TPC Louisiana produced an all-time scoring low last year of 71.00. Jason Dufner and Ernie Els went head to head in a playoff which produced a 72 hole course-record 19-under 269 for both players. With a birdie on the second hole of sudden death, Dufner was able to seize his first PGA TOUR victory.

With seventy-one bunkers and five water hazards it is fair to say that course management and distance control are strategically significant when navigating this track.  Generally speaking, long ball hitters should have a slight advantage and may find themselves with ample GIRs.

Rain and thunderstorms cannot be ruled out for this tournament, especially in the first two rounds.  Moderate winds are forecast throughout as temperatures are said to rise to 80 degrees during every round.
