“What-ney” a win! The Barclays 2012 Wrap-up

The BarclaysThe playoffs are in full swing as the race for the FedEx Cup Championship got underway this weekend at New York’s Bethpage State Park Black Course.  The field was robust with the top 125, less Jason Dufner, in attendance to juice up their FedEx Cup Points.

With a disappointing season coming to a close, Nick Watney sure brought his clutch game to Bethpage when it mattered most.  With one victory at the Barclays, Watney shoots to number 1 on the FedEx Cup standings and puts himself in a great spot to play in the final 30 at the Tour Championship.

“It’s been not the season I would have hoped for so far,” Watney said. “But in golf, one week can change that. It’s funny how that happens.” He added, “Golf is funny in that way. Just a couple little things here and there, and all of a sudden you’re playing great.”

Watney finished at 10-under to claim his fifth career win on Tour.  With a two-putt for birdie on the seventh, Watney watched as Garcia bogeyed the par-3 eighth from the bunker.  Watney went on to nail a 30-foot birdie to take his first lead of the day.  Davis Love III has a lot to think about for his four wild card picks for the US Ryder Cup Team and Watney now plays in consideration.

Love will announce the picks after the Deutsche Bank Championship, which ends on Labor Day.

Tiger Woods shot himself down to 3rd place in FedEx Cup Standings with a poor putting display over the weekend.  Being notorious lately for not “showing up” on the weekend, the 15 time major winner needs to regain his focus next week before heading to the final 30.

Sergio Garcia has begun his hot streak for the title so keep an eye out for recent tournament winner.  Next week will definitely separate the men from the boys.
