Zach Johnson Wins the 2014 Hyundai Tournament of Champions

Those who went with our fantasy picks this week are most certainly swimming in points this morning!   In total five of our seven picks finished in the top ten including the winner, the runner-up, and 3 others who tied for 6th…not a bad way to kick off 2014!

Less than 30 days after his dramatic victory over Tiger Woods at the World Challenge, Zach Johnson put his stamp on 2014 and set the tone for what looks to be a promising season ahead.   Despite a discouraging 3rd round 74, Johnson turned his fate around with a final round (7 under) 66 at the Plantation Course at Kapalua on Monday.  In all Zach carded only two “5s” on his scorecard during the final round (which incidentally came on par 5 holes) everything else came in at 4 or better.

When asked about his performance in the final round Johnson stated, “I didn’t deviate from anything I typically do on a golf course.”  This go around for Johnson was a little easier than the world challenge which he won on a hole-out from a drop zone to defeat Woods.

Jordan Spieth 2014 Hyundai Tournament of Champions

As for the rest of the field, the phase sophomore slump is certainly not in the vocabulary of 20 year old Jordan Spieth.   Finishing just one stroke behind Johnson, Spieth continues to show us that he’ll be a force to recon with again this season.  His putter however single-handedly cost him the victory as he consistently pushed and pulled both long and short putts.  Finishing one off the leader, Jordan would could have potentially grabbed  his second career victory by more than 4 strokes if he had his putting game in round 4.

Defending champ Dustin Johnson looked to be in contention through the first three rounds but all struggled from the start on monday Monday.  Kicking off his round with 2 bogeys, DJ never seemed to regain his focus after the back stretch.  Erratic shots and missed putting opportunities cost him the top spot here, but overall his game looked in tune, showing his potential to be a major contender as well this season.

With the win, Zach Johnson moves up 65 spots to 7th on the FedExCup points leaderboard and will head over to Waialae for the Sony Open later this week.
