The 2015 Quicken Loans National Preview

We’re coming down the final stretch for fantasy golf with only two more events remaining before the season’s final major in three weeks.  Shortly after that we’ll enter into the FedExCup playoffs with the kickoff in New Jersey at the 2015 Barclays—an event we’re excited to be covering live.

This week, the field thickens a bit with some big names returning to action after making their way back from St. Andrews.  Tiger Woods will be in attendance as this week’s Quicken Loans National as his featured/hosted event and comes off the heels of back-to-back missed cuts in majors.  Tiger had a glimmer of hope with a nice finish at the Greenbrier (3 rounds in the 60s), but that quickly faded with dismal play in Scotland.

Jimmy Walker is a fantasy favorite this week coming in with a massive 101.47 GPFP and he has a chance to join Jordan Spieth as the only player with more than two PGA TOUR wins this season.

This truly is the best time of the year for golf fans as the Top 125 will be duking it out to get to New Jersey in four short weeks.

Last Week’s Fantasy Results

It was a tough pill to swallow last week as we watched our horse pick Bubba Watson come up just short for a 2nd place finish as Jason Day dropped a clutch 22 footer for birdie on 18.  Yet, despite the two missed cuts and last minute Snedeker withdrawal, our fantasy picks for the RBC Canadian Open still managed to bank $726K to bump up our weekly fantasy earning average to $1.076 million per week (after 34 events this season).

With a slightly disappointing week in Canada in the books, we now have a successful run of three winners and one runner up picked in the last five events.

The Field

Last year’s defending champion Justin Rose will join up with the ultra-hot Jimmy Walker and THE PLAYERS and Scottish Open Champ Rickie Fowler to round out an all-star lineup that will also include Tiger Woods this week.  In all, this week’s field includes 13 PGA TOUR winners from this season, including recent champs Danny Lee (Greenbrier Classic) and Scott Piercy (Barbasol Championship).

Rose has played consistently well all season and could be a serious contender for a title defense.  Justin tops out the DraftKings salary board at $12,200 this week but questions remain as to whether he’s worth the hefty price tag.

Among the big names mentioned here will also be some excellent lesser-known players like Kokrak, Perez, and Justin Thomas.  Keeping that in mind we have some great sleeper ideas for the course this week as well as some solid picks to win—more on that below.

The Course

Robert Trent Jones Golf Club measures in at a challenging 7,385 yards and plays as a par 71.  The course offers plenty of spectacular views as it was craftily carved into the Virginia shoreline.

Robert fell in love the terrain so much that he purchased the land for himself and began designing the course to attract some immediate attention.

The course opened in 1991 and became the site of the Presidents Cup and has played host to the event four times between 1994 and 2005.  This will be the Quicken Loans National’s visit here as it has traditionally been played at Congressional CC over the years.

Weather Forecast for Gainesville, VA

The weather forecast looks excellent for most of the week despite a few showers late in the day during Round 1.

Players should expect a fast, dry, and firm track in a hot 90-95 degree sunny setting this week in Virginia.

Last Year’s Quicken Loans National Results

Last year Justin Rose became victorious in what was this event’s first ever playoff as he defeated Shawn Stefani on the first extra hole.

Rose held a share of the lead as he played the final hole but ended up hooking his approach shot into the water.  He scrambled to save bogey in dramatic fashion by drilling a 15-footer.

Stefani went on to copy Rose with the same mistake on the first playoff hole but ended up with a double bogey as Rose knocked in a winning par to take the trophy.

With the win, Rose joined Tiger Woods as the only other player to win this event more than once.

In the final round of the 2014 Quicken Loans National, Justin Rose battles his way into a playoff against Shawn Stefani, and emerges victorious for his sixth victory on TOUR. . SUBSCRIBE to PGA TOUR now: http://pgat.us/vBxcZSh Welcome to the official YouTube channel of the PGA TOUR.

Where to Play Fantasy Golf for the Quicken Loans National this Week

Here are a few of our favorite daily fantasy leagues for this week’s Quicken Loans National:

  • DraftKings PGA $3 Satellite to $1,000 FGWC Qualifier: This is your chance to earn a $1,000 ticket to the big $600,000 Golf World Championship Qualifier which is awarding first place $1,000 and a chance to go to TPC Boston to see your players live and try and win a share of $600,000.  DraftKings will provide the $1,000 dollars towards airfare and you’ll get access to all-four rounds in the DraftKings Lounge of the DB Championship.  Pretty cool huh?
  • Fantasy Feud PGA $2.20 1K Guaranteed: With a low $2.20 entry fee and payouts for the top 100 teams, this lesser-known contest is a nice place to potentially sweep in and pick up a chance at the $100 top prize.

This Week’s Quicken Loans National Fantasy Notes

Players shouldn’t have much difficultly getting off the tee this week at Robert Trent Jones GC so look for approach shots and the short game to really be where this event is won or lost.  Players need to get it close to the hole here so really key in on pin-seeking stats this week.

We’ll also be looking at putting stats as our key focus because players with hot short stick should fare well here.

Regardless, do yourself a favor and keep Tiger off your roster this week, but we’re pretty sure you’ll already be doing that.

Top 5 Picks/Odds to Win the Quicken Loans National

  • Justin Rose (Golficity Odds: 8/1 FPPG: 70.4 GPFP: 56.31 Salary: $12,200): As mentioned earlier Rose is a clear favorite this week on most stat boards.  The two-time champion of this event (2010, 2014) will be looking to do more damage, but this go around he’ll have to do it on a new track.  Despite his low GPFP, Justin has been pretty consistent with high finishes and ample fantasy points.  In his last three events, Rose has finished P2, T27, T6 and ranks high in almost every stat category on TOUR.  He’s not known for his accuracy off of these tees but his excellent ball-striking game can set him up nicely on this course.
  • Jimmy Walker (Golficity Odds: 12/1 FPPG: 80.53 GPFP: 101.47 Salary: $11,000): It was Fowler or Walker in the two-spot this week and all signs we’re pointing towards Jimmy.  Why we took him over Rickie was first, he’s the better pick with a cheaper price tag, and second, he ranks 1st on TOUR in strokes gained putting—plus he can hit the ball a mile.  Walker currently ranks ninth in adjusted scoring and definitely due for a mid/end of season breakout.
  • Justin Thomas (Golficity Odds:  18/1 FPPG: 68.52  GPFP: 88.39 Salary: $10,000): Justin Thomas is not on a lot of people’s radar this week but you should certainly consider him.  Chances are you won’t fit him or Walker on a roster with Rose, but you could build an impressive secondary lineup with Thomas and Walker.  Justin has 6 Top 10s on the season and is coming into Virginia off the heels of a T5 at the John Deere.  He’s rested and usually plays strong after the off-weeks.  Thomas currently ranks 6th in the all-around and like Walker he can get plenty of distance off of the tee.
  • Will Wilcox (Golficity Odds: 28/1  FPPG: 67.27 GPFP: 70.63 Salary: $8,900): Wilcox rested last week after taking solo second at the Barbasol the week prior.  The strong finish came off the heels of his T8 at the John Deere just the week before.  Needless to say, Wilcox is streaking right now and could shoot up this leaderboard to help you gain an advantage with a name you most likely haven’t used yet this season.  Surprisingly he leads the TOUR in the all-around and looks to be beaming with confidence.
  • Daniel Summerhays (Golficity Odds: 38/1 FPPG: 59.54 GPFP: 47.63 Salary: $8,600): Summerhays could be a popular pick this week due to recent play—and rightfully so.  He comes into this week’s Quicken Loans National with a T11 at the RBC Canadian last week and a T8 at the John Deere just two weeks before.  He currently ranks T8 in strokes gained putting and T35 in par-4 scoring.

Sleeper Pick/Odds to Win the Quicken Loans National

  • Daniel Berger (Golficity Odds: 50/1  FPPG: 60.44 GPFP: 64.67 Salary: $7,800): Berger is a big hitter who can shorten holes without a problem but his putter tends to hold him back.  If he heats up the short stick he could run up the leaderboard this week and fair well as a $7,800 spot on your roster.  We’re not holding out too much hope of a Berger win here given the strong field but he has 5 Top 10s and has earned over $1.8 million as a rookie so far this season.  All that adds up to a potentially strong fantasy points showing and quite a bit of value for his price.

Salary Cap League Sleeper Pick/Odds to Win the Quicken Loans National

  • Chesson Hadley (Golficity Odds 66/1 FPPG: 58.26 GPFP: 69.91 Salary: $6,100): Chesson is a solid pick with a price tag that can really free up some fantasy cash for other bigger ticket players.  We picked him last week and he came with a disappointing T72 finish but we’re going to give him another shot with his $6,100 price tag and almost 70 GFPF.  He had a great run during April-May but has cooled off since.  If we had to pick one good sleeper to go with this week to fit in this slot, it would be Hadley.

  • Brandt Snedeker (Golficity Odds 18/1): WD
  • Brooks Koepka (Golficity Odds 28/1): T18 ($78,300)
  • Matt Jones (Golficity Odds 35/1): MC
