And THAT’S Why Cody Gribble is on the Web.com Tour

Heading to the 18th hole at Victoria National Golf Club, Cody Gribble was tied with Seamus Power (both actual names of golfers on the Web.com Tour).

Gribble would put himself in great position off the tee box and have the chance to put his second shot on the green for a potential walk-off birdie.

Then this happened:

Yes, it was a great shot that landed about five feet from the hole.  But it was also 100% the wrong shot.

Cody, you’re tied for the lead on the 18th hole on the final day of a tournament.  You stay below the hole.  Like way below.  Let your putter win it for you.  Or at the very least, give yourself a chance to have your putter win it for you.

That pin placement is your textbook example of a “sucker-pin.”  Sure, you have a good line to go right at it, but as the video shows, if you’re just five feet off your distance, good-bye golf ball.

Let Cody’s harsh lesson be one to all of us amateurs out there.  Just because you can go at the flag on your second shot, doesn’t always mean you actually should go after the flag on your second shot.  There’s no shame in hitting into the “fat” part of the green with approach shots.

Remember, you aren’t playing against those in your foursome.  You’re playing against the golf course designer.  And some of those designers can be flat out nasty with their green undulations!

In the case of Cody Gribble, Course Designer 1 – Cody Gribble 0.
