USGA Announces U.S. Open Eligibility For Golfers Playing in LIV Tour

The U.S. Open is approaching quickly. The first round is set to begin next week, June 16th with a lot of buzz happening around it. Tiger Woods is sitting out for this one because his leg isn’t quite ready yet. LIV Golfers such as Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, Sergio Garcia, Louis Oosthuizen, Kevin Na, and others will begin teeing up at the first LIV Golf Event at Centurion Golf Club in London.

However, will the top golfers in the world rankings and also golfers with qualifying exemptions be allowed to play?

The USGA made it clear today that wherever the players will be teeing it up they will be eligible to play the 2022 U.S. Open. Players like Phil, DJ,  Louis, Sergio, and Na will be able to play the U.S. Open if they so desire. This may be an issue for the PGA Tour if all the Majors turn out to be this way and what the points are for world rankings in LIV events.

A lot of things are still to be answered. Phil and DJ already said they plan to play the U.S. Open, as Phil needs to win this Major to complete the career grand slam. This might be the only major Phil is after in his career.

It is not clear if any of the LIV players are eligible to play The Open Championship, but one would have to assume that they are if they meet the qualifying requirements. The only restriction would be not being able to play in PGA Tour events since majors are separate.

The Open Championship will be played starting July 14th at historic St. Andrews. News will be broken on the eligibility status of LIV golfers in the coming days.
