With golf’s third major currently in progress, many fans probably don’t know that there is another PGA TOUR event also in progress. The Barbasol Championship is also taking place this week in Alabama and one player is making the most of his time there.

Chad Collins is a 38-year-old golfer that is a veteran of the PGA TOUR. Collins has participated in 180 events on the PGA TOUR and his best finish is only third place. Because of his limited success, Collins did not qualify for the Open Championship, thus being in Alabama this week rather than the U.K. This might have actually worked out better for Collins, however.

“I gave (shooting 59) a run. I’m not too disappointed at all about 60.”

On a day where wind ruled the course at Royal Birkdale and players struggled to shoot low scores, Collins was having no problem getting birdies in Alabama. Collins finished his day with a 60, that included a stretch of six birdies from the 11th hole to the 16th and a near ace on the 17th. While he came one putt away from the magical 59, it was by far Collins’ best round on Tour and puts him in good position heading into the weekend.

Collins admitted that he was aiming for that 59 but is still ecstatic with his performance. “I gave (shooting 59) a run. I’m not too disappointed at all about 60,” Collins said. “You’ve got to make a lot of putts to shoot rounds like that. You’ve got to hit it well too and I did both of those. It’s a nice breath of fresh air …to be in this situation come the weekend.”

That situation that Collins is referring to is the top of the leaderboard. He currently sits at -15 for the tournament, four shots ahead of his nearest competition. The 60 that he carded today obviously had a lot to do with his current position, as he catapulted from ninth place to start the day all the way to first.

Now that he is squarely in the lead of the tournament, we can only hope that Collins is able to hold on and take home his first PGA TOUR victory.
