Minnesota Might be Getting a PGA TOUR Event in 2019

The PGA TOUR is already going through a major schedule change heading into 2019 and now, there looks to be another change brewing for the already shaky schedule.

It was reported recently that the Houston Open missed its deadline to find a sponsor for the event, opening up the spot on the schedule. Taking advantage of the opportunity, the PGA TOUR is looking to upgrade the event and move it to as early as June, to be played right before the U.S. Open. And the location for the new event looks to be in Minnesota.

Reports have surfaced that 3M will be the sponsor for an event that is close to securing a five-year deal to be hosted at TPC Twin Cities. If the deal is real and confirmed, it would be the first time that the PGA TOUR had a permanent event in the state of Minnesota since 1960, when the Minnesota Golf Classic was played.

While there is a great deal of smoke surrounding this event change, there has been no comment from any side of the equation. The only statement that was released came from tournament director for the PGA Tour Champions, Hollis Cavner, who stated that “We will not comment on this until there is a formal agreement.”

If the deal does become official, it would create a big change for the event. TPC Twin Cities is a much longer course than the Golf Club at Houston, which could change the dynamic of how the tournament is played. This looks to be especially difficult for the Senior Tour, as the course could be extended by over 500 yards for the tournament.

Since nothing is confirmed at this time, we can’t say for sure that there will be another event change to the schedule but it sure looks poised to happen. When it does happen, it can be added to the long list of changes that we’ll be seeing in professional golf next season.
