Volcanic Eruption in Guatemala Destroys PGA Latinoamerica Track

On Sunday afternoon, the “Volcan de Fuego” aka the Volcano of Fire erupted suddenly in Guatemala, causing incredible damage across the Central American country. The eruption dropped lava and volcanic ash all around the mountain and shot smoke that was visible almost 30 miles away in Guatemala City. The country is now in a state of emergency until further notice.

La Reunion Golf Resort and Residences was in the eruption zone and is now completely unrecognizable. The course is the home to PGA Latinoamerica’s Guatemala Stella Artois Open annually but that could be in jeopardy after the blast.

The resort and course is aware of the danger that it faces and was prepared to evacuate as soon as the order was given. Ironically, being just a few miles away from a few volcanoes is one of the course’s biggest draws, as the course markets the beauty of being in a valley between four separate volcanoes.

Many were able to videotape the event and it was an awe inspiring experience but the eruption was just as dangerous as it was amazing. There have been at least 25 fatalities and hundreds of injuries after the sudden eruption.

Sadly, there are also several thousand people that are still missing. So clearly there are some more important things to worry about than the future of golf in the region.

It is unbelievable to see the damage that this quick event has caused in Central America and we can only hope that the rest of the missing Guatemalans are found safe. And hopefully after that, reparations can begin.
