2019 Memorial Tournament Fantasy Sleeper Report

Even though we’ve enjoyed a fantastic golf season to date, you get the impression that we’re just about heading into the business end of the campaign.

We’ve got two more majors to enjoy – the first of which comes in about a fortnight’s time at the US Open from Pebble Beach – and the conclusion of the FedExCup, which has been brought forward to August in 2019.

The high-quality feel begins in earnest this week with the Memorial Tournament, where a strong field will meet at Muirfield Village in Dublin, Ohio.

And yet, ironically, it’s been an event where longshots and sleepers have enjoyed plenty of success: David Lingmerth, William McGirt and even Jason Dufner, in the doldrums at the time, have all lifted this trophy despite being rated as nothing more than an underdog by the sportsbooks.

That said, we still expect classy tee-to-green operators to thrive this week. There’s some penal rough to avoid and small Bentgrass greens to attack, and that means keeping your ball in play – and hitting laser-like approaches – is the key.

Bryson DeChambeau is the defending champion, and he’s no stranger to methodical ball-striking excellence. And the two players he beat in last season’s play-off, Kyle Stanley and Byeong-Hun An, are not-too-shabby in that department either!

So there’s plenty for sleeper backers to look forward to in Ohio this week, so who makes the shortlist for our Memorial Tournament picks?

Memorial Tournament Fantasy Sleeper Report

Billy Horschel – 60/1 – You get the impression that B-Ho is there or thereabouts with his form at the moment.

The world number 42 finished T23 at the PGA Championship and T26 in The Masters, so you sense he’s on the cusp of something impressive, and at a layout at Muirfield where his tee-to-green improvements will be rewarded that is notable.

Horschel ranked first for Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee at Colonial and also made +0.70 on the field on Approach, so the basic foundations of his game are close to their best.

And if he can get his generally excellent putting flowing, who knows where that could lead.

Rory Sabbatini – 66/1 – Quite what has clicked for Rory Sabbatini in recent times is anybody’s guess, but the South African turned Slovak is currently playing his best golf in years.

Three top-10s in his last four starts, plus a T18, confirm that he is getting into the mix on a weekly basis, and that form is traveling too: from the tight and testy Colonial to the expansive Trinity Forest he has played well, and that tends to be a good sign.

We’re not looking at a one trick pony here either as he gained strokes on the field in all departments at Colonial, so back Sabbatini to continue his recent excellent form with another strong showing at Muirfield.

Jim Furyk – 66/1 – There has been some surprise winners at Muirfield Village in recent times – William McGirt and David Lingmerth hardly roll off the tongue – but even so nobody would be overly surprised if Furyk gets back in the winners’ circle again soon.

He won here in 2002 and was runner-up in both 1997 and 2009, so here’s as good a place as any for the Bald Eagle to return to winning ways before he sets sail for the good ship Champions Tour in the near future.

There are courses where the 49-year-old gets blown away by the bombers all around him, but that won’t be the case at Muirfield where his accurate tee-to-green game and canny course management will both stand him in excellent stead.

Jason Kokrak – 66/1 – Kokrak has been rather hastily discarded by the sportsbooks after a run of excellent form of late.

A run of four top-10 finishes in five starts was ended at the RBC Heritage (T16), before a fairly lackluster showing at the Wells Fargo.

But Kokrak bounded back to form with a T23 at the PGA Championship, and for a player who has really excelled from tee-to-green in recent times the trip to Ohio comes at the perfect time.

Peter Uihlein – 80/1 – This seems like as good a time as any to back Uihlein given that six of his last eight rounds have been in the 60s.

That has led to T5 and T13 finishes at the AT&T Byron Nelson and Charles Schwab Challenge respectively, and now the 29-year-old will have designs on winning his maiden PGA TOUR title.

It’s as likely to come at Muirfield Village as anywhere. T25 on debut here in 2017, Uihlein performed even better 12 months ago, banking a T5 – his best payout on the PGA TOUR to date – which included a superb final round of 66.
