Duffs to Darts – 5 Month Check-In
Duffs to Darts on a Dime- 5 Month Check In
duffstodarts 5 month check in. I recap week 20 as well as this months goals. This is the last check in for 2 weeks as I will be on Vacation!
I’m pretty sure the saying goes April showers bring May flowers. That’s not the case in the north suburbs of Chicago this year as we received the most rainfall in 148 years of record keeping.
8.24 inches of rain over the course of the month to be exact. April wasn’t any better except that had snow too.
This wasn’t the best thing for the Duffs to Darts project. Constant rain prevented me from getting outside to practice or play so May was a bit of a wash. See what I did there? Rain, wash…… ok moving on. Here is recap of May’s goals:
- Play 18 holes
- Play two 9-hole rounds
- Average 2 putts per hole
- Driving range before every round
My Goals may not seem that difficult but with an hour drive to get to work and another hour to get home, weekend range sessions are difficult. Because of all the rain I couldn’t even get to the range on my lunch breaks.
With all the rain I ended up purchasing some rain gear. I didn’t have any, so I figured it was time to get some.
Good thing I did because I needed it when I played my 18-hole round. Every swing came with a spray of mud and water.
It wasn’t my best scoring round, but I started to get my driver back on track, hit some solid 3 Woods off the tee and showed that putting is my strength. The two 9-hole rounds were supposed to be changed to another 18 holes when I was invited to play with Michael Vrska, John Barba (My Golf Spy) and Adam from Golf Unfiltered.
It was going to be a great time…if we didn’t get rained out. As a result, I was only able to log one additional 9-hole round before my month ended. That round was my best 9 holes of the year. Two lost balls on one hole followed by bogey golf showed I’m back on track.
The biggest issue of the round was simple: Aim further. I was aiming to the front of every green instead of the middle/ middle back.
I kept landing short. Resulting in a chip and two putts for bogey. Land those approach shots closer and its Par.
The highlight of the round came when I made a 30-footer for bogey and finished the 9 holes with 17 total putts. I averaged 2 putts per hole when I played this month. That’s another goal reached for me.

Month 6
The plan for month 6 is going to be different. The first two weeks of this month I will be on vacation. This means I won’t have my clubs, PuttOUT or even any dedicated time to practice.
The flip side of this is I will be playing 18 holes in Disney at the Magnolia course. I will be renting their full set of TaylorMade clubs and documenting the entire experience.
We are past the point of preparation and now we are at the point of production. It’s time to log those rounds and lower that handicap. Here are the goals for month 6 of Duffs to Darts:
- Play 18 holes in Disney (Bucket list)
- Shoot below 90 in Disney
- Play two 9-hole rounds
- Maintain 2 putts per hole average
- Read “The little Red Book” by Harvey Pennick

This is the best I have felt about my game for a month. I have seen a serious upward trend in my skill set.
I expect month 6 to be the most productive month so far. Until next month, keep grinding!
