Coming right on the heels of Bubba Watson’s recent withdrawal from The Open we now have yet another player who won’t be making the trip across the pond due to a positive COVID-19 test.

This time, it’s 2015 Open Champion Zach Johnson who will have to watch the season’s last Major from the sidelines.

Although the situation is certainly upsetting for Johnson, the fallout actually could have been much worse.

Zach received the news of his positive COVID-19 test shortly before he was scheduled to board a charter flight to England with a host of other players. This allowed Johnson to separate himself and not cause additional players to be exposed, which could have had the potential of limiting the field even further.

Johnson was given a routine rapid PCR test after finishing his Sunday round at the John Deere Classic and was informed he had tested positive just 90 minutes later.

Zach Johnson’s withdrawal brings the total to 16 players who have either withdrawn or opted out of playing this year’s Open Championship.
