On February 10th Dern was taking into custody and charged with one count of manslaughter in the first degree.
The Southampton Press reported that:
“During Dern’s arraignment in Southampton on Friday, prosecutors said the two were drinking and enjoying watching a golf tournament on television when they got into an “altercation” after the program ended.”
The Southampton Press also reported that, according to prosecutors:
“Dern allegedly punched Somers in the face and then put him into a chokehold, breaking a small bone in the victim’s throat that asphyxiated him.”
The authorities believe that Somers was left on Dern’s front porch for three hours before he called 911 where he told the police on the scene that, “he felt his buddy’s body go limp while he was choking him.”
Dern was held on $500,000 bail. The case is expected to be presented to a grand jury next week.

New York Jets owner Woody Johnson, Paul McCartney and Chevy Chase all are member at the Long Island club where both Dern and Somers worked.
This is a tragic story and I hope that the Somers’ family gets the closer that they need to cope with this terrible loss. I can’t even imagine what they are going through, along with what the club and its members are going through losing such a valuable, long term employee.
This just shows that life is so valuable and everyone’s life is temporary so make sure you tell your loved ones that you love them, you never know when it’ll be the last time.
R.I.P. Kevin Somers
