Johnson as been an assistant captain in the last two Ryder Cup matches in 2018 and 2021, where the U.S. team is coming off its biggest Ryder Cup margin of victory to date winning 19-9.
Johnson will be trying to lead the U.S. team to it first victory on European soil in 30 years.
A captain has not been named yet for the European team yet as some candidates interest in the Saudi backed golf league has put a paused to the captain search.
The winner at Augusta National and St. Andrews was chosen by a committee that included three PGA TOUR players and three PGA of America executives, where Steve Stricker was one of the players on the committee.

Johnson’s hiring shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone as he has been a model assistant captain in the past two Ryder Cups. The other rumored captain for the 2023 Ryder Cup was Phil Mickelson but after his comments about the PGA TOUR and Saudi Golf League this past week, it is no surprise that he was not selected.
Good for Zach Johnson and hopefully he can lead the U.S. team to another victory over Europe.
