With all eyes fixed on this afternoon’s President’s Cup finale, we were in danger of missing some seriously competitive golf over on the Ladies European Tour.

The KPMG Irish Open at Dromoland Castle was finalized in dramatic fashion, with Klara Spilkova of the Czech Republic birdieing the first playoff hole to secure the win.

Her regulation play was what grabbed the viewers’ attention. With some spellbinding short game and creativity, her up and down from the greenside water hazard on the 71st hole takes some beating. Shoes off, socks off, knee deep in mud and reeds, the Czech produced one of the best up-and-downs of the season to stay in the hunt. She then did the same on the 18th, with a near eagle chip that set up a tap in birdie and posted -14.

At one point, there were six names at the top on -13. Home favorite Leona Maguire just missed out in the playoff, despite weekend scores of 68 and 65. Nicole Brosch of Denmark birdied 15, 16 and then 17 to join the playoff at 14 under, alongside Ursula Wikstrom of Finland.

Klara Spilkova reigns supreme in Ireland, and the water shot on the 17th played a vital role. It was similar to watching Bill Haas secure the FedEx Cup back in 2011 with an audacious chip from the rocks with $10m on the line. The financial stakes were lower today, but the standard was just as high as the Ladies European Tour produced another spectacle over in Ireland.
