Tiger Woods, Matt Kuchar, Patrick Cantlay, Hideki Matsuyama, and Viktor Hovland have all won the Silver Cup at Augusta for turning in the best score among the amateurs playing in the Masters. They all went on to have pretty good pro careers as well.

After this weekend, we may add Gordon Sargent to the list.

The 20-year-old sophomore at Vanderbilt is the world’s top-ranked amateur golfer and is known to hit the tar out of a golf ball.

Sargent didn’t waste any time on Monday living up to his reputation. He played a practice round with Justin Thomas and Max Homa. Not only did he outdrive the 2022 PGA Championship winner and the two-time PGA Tour winner in 2023, but he did so early and often.

Some reports from the course stated that he was outdriving the pair of pros by 40 yards. Homa said he lost count of how many times it happened.

Added Homa’s caddie, Joe Greiner, “Holy s—!”

Sargent told Golf Channel:

“I couldn’t let them just hit it past me. JT said something about how far I hit it by him on 11, but yeah, I guess they got used to it or something.”

Sargent, who has been paired with Jason Day and Zach Johnson for the first two rounds, is one of seven amateurs competing in this year’s Masters.

The Silver Cup hasn’t been awarded since 2020 because no amateurs made the cut in 2021 or ’22.
