Jon Rahm & Scottie Scheffler Skipping The Wells Fargo Championship

Rahm and Scheffler are taking their free pass on elevated events roughly into that halfway point of the season. However, their decision to bow out next week will mean a deduction of 25% of their PIP earnings (Player Impact Program) if they have another absence. It is slightly more difficult for a player like Jon Rahm, that needs to play 4 times in Europe to be Ryder Cup eligible.

As many know, Mcilroy has already missed two events which cost him a 3 million deduction from his PIP earnings. At the end of the day, the players have to decide if health or PIP money is more important to them or if necessary rest and or recovery is needed from week to week. Some of these players have sponsor commitments to play additional tournaments as well, which could make for a “grind it out” type of season. There are 3 more Tour events and 4 more majors until the FedEx Cup Playoffs commence.

With less than 50 days until the US Open, it will be interesting to see what players who have missed one or more events will do. The Travelers Championship will be the week directly after the U.S. Open at Los Angeles CC, and typically, players enjoy a week of rest after a major. The U.S. Open Championship is one of the toughest tests of golf, not only physically but mentally as well.

There’s a possibility there will be more revisions to the new structures of these events upon player feedback and the conclusion of the season.
