Robert MacIntyre Gets First PGA TOUR Win With His Dad on the Bag

Robert MacIntyre captured his first PGA TOUR crown on Sunday at the RBC Canadian Open — and someone special was on the bag.

As Father’s Day approaches, it seemed like fate for MacIntyre to put his own Dad on the bag and capture what is perhaps the most special moment of his PGA TOUR career thus far, and could stay that way forever.

MacIntyre managed to win with a -2 on Sunday, making it to -16 for the tournament and taking home his first TOUR victory. He talked about the victory on Sunday after his triumph:

“Goosebumps. It’s incredible. It’s a dream of mine to play golf for a living. It’s been a dream of mine to win on the PGA Tour…I just can’t believe I done it with my dad on the bag. The guy’s taught me the way I play golf.”

It did not come without some controversy. MacIntyre had enough of a CBS Sports drone halfway through the final round and made his feelings very clear to it.

However, it could not derail his play this weekend, which was spectacular. Despite only posting a -2 on Sunday, MacIntyre was able to fend off Ben Griffin for the win, who was on fire late on the back nine and birdied 15, 16, and 17 to pull within a stroke. MacIntyre struggled through the back nine and canceled out several bogies he fired:

“I was in a dog fight there. Obviously, Ben made it difficult coming in the stretch. He played well. It’s just incredible to do this with my dad on the bag and have my girlfriend here, and I’m sure there’s a party going on back home in Oban.”

The emotion of having his Dad on the bag for his first TOUR win was evident. In a post-round interview with Amanda Balionis, MacIntyre tried to put into words what the victory meant to him, and, perhaps more importantly, how he would not be in the position he is in now without his Father:

It is a memory the two will share forever as MacIntyre’s young professional career has culminated in its first victory after a Ryder Cup team appearance last year.
