Scottie Scheffler Wins Six Times Before July — A Feat Not Done in Over 60 Years

Scottie Scheffler’s run on the PGA TOUR throughout the past two has been constantly compared to Tiger Woods. It has been nothing short of spectacular, but every time Scheffler seems to put up a statistic that seems unrealistic and unheard of, it always gets the response of, “Well, Tiger already did that.”

But this time, it cannot be said. Scheffler has accomplished something in the professional ranks that has never been done in the modern era and hasn’t been done since 1962 when Arnold Palmer did it: win six times before July on the PGA TOUR.

Scheffler had won five times so far this year coming into this past weekend’s Travelers Championship — The American Express, WM Phoenix Open, The Masters, Valero Texas Open, The Sentry, and the Charles Schwab Challenge.

After outdueling friend Tom Kim for the Travelers Championship crown in a sudden-death playoff hole, Scheffler had officially accomplished something that nobody has done in over sixty years.

It did not come without drama, however. Scheffler held a one-stroke lead over Kim going to the 72nd hole. It did not last, as Kim was able to run his tee shot to roughly 100 yards, hitting a lob wedge that landed next to the hole and trickled back to leave him ten feet for birdie. Scheffler came up just short of the green and landed in the fringe, missing his birdie putt by a matter of inches.

Kim came up clutch and hit the birdie putt — after protestors stormed the green — to send it to a playoff hole.

Kim tried the same strategy in the playoff hole — a long drive and a lob wedge — but his drive left him about 111 yards short of the hole, which was a stretch for the highest-lofted club in the bag. He would land in the bunker, leaving him a tricky shot to get up and down to put the pressure on Scottie to nail his birdie putt from roughly nine feet.

Kim could not get up and down and would bogey the hole. Scheffler would two-putt for the victory.

Scheffler, who won four of the eight elevated PGA TOUR events this year, joins a list of just three other golfers who have won six times in a PGA TOUR season since 1983.
