Davis Thompson said the key to capturing his first PGA TOUR victory on Sunday at the John Deere Classic was staying aggressive due to soft playing conditions at TPC Deere Run in Illinois.

Thompson was chasing his first win on TOUR and came close last weekend at the Rocket Mortgage. It seemed he would be damned if he was going to let a near miss happen once again.

During a press conference after his first win, he detailed what his thoughts were throughout the final round, hoping to shed some light on what kind of mentality he had as he chased after that elusive victory:

“I just wanted to stay aggressive. I knew there would be low scores out there today because the wind kind of died down, and the conditions were a little soft. So I knew I was going to have to go play well. Thankfully, I made a great putt on one and had a great up and down on two and kept the ball rolling.”

Thompson went into the final round with a two-shot lead, and he wanted to build on that early in the round. Everything went according to plan, as Thompson fired off five birdies in the first six holes and held a comfortable six-shot lead.

He would win by four.

The victory does a lot of things for Thompson. He will now be able to play The Open Championship in two weeks at Royal Troon, and he will play in his first-ever Masters Tournament in April. He will also qualify for the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow next year.

Thompson also collected $1,440,000.
