LIV Golf Star Suspended for PED Violation: ‘I Deeply Regret the Oversight’
LIV Golf star Graeme McDowell has been suspended for a performance-enhancing drug (PED) violation after taking Vicks nasal decongestant, which contains an ingredient on the banned substance list.
McDowell has also been fined $125,000 for the violation.
It occurred at LIV Nashville in College Grove, Tennessee, which took place in late June. McDowell said in a statement that he was “struggling with severe congestion” and took the Vicks product “without realizing it might be on the banned list.”
Athletes are required to use a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) to avoid this type of issue. However, McDowell admitted that he did not take the time to disclose his use of the product:
“Ahead of LIV Nashville, I was struggling with severe congestion that was affecting my sleep. In an effort to manage it, I used a generic Vicks nasal decongestant without realizing it might be on the banned list. As a professional golfer, I understand the importance of checking all medications and the option to apply for a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE). Unfortunately, I did not take the time to do this due to the over-the-counter nature of this medicine, and deeply regret the oversight. I fully accept the sanctions imposed by LIV.”

McDowell will miss LIV Greenbrier this coming week as a result of the mishap. LIV Golf said that a “to-be-confirmed” player will fill in for McDowell’s spot on Smash GC. There are also team implications:
“…in accordance with the Policy, a one tournament suspension effective at LIV Golf Greenbrier will be imposed; a fine of $125,000 will be assessed; and the player’s and team’s results for LIV Golf Nashville will be disqualified (with prize money and points retroactively adjusted).”
McDowell will be eligible to return on September 13 at LIV Golf Chicago.
