Rory McIlroy on Another Runner-Up Finish: ‘I Keep Giving Myself Chances’
Rory McIlroy is no stranger to second-place finishes in 2024. Unfortunately, he found another silver at the BMW PGA Championship yesterday at Wentworth.
McIlroy, over the weekend, felt his third runner-up finish of the year after last weekend’s finish at the Irish Open and the U.S. Open earlier this year.
He has constantly put himself in the situation to win but has only been able to break through at the Wells Fargo Championship individually.
Rory McIlroy in the last 3 months:
2nd – BMW PGA
2nd – Irish Open
5th – Olympics
4th – Scottish Open
2nd – US Open
4th – Canadian Open— Daniel Hussey (@DanielHussey2) September 22, 2024
He also won at the Zurich Classic in a partner event with Shane Lowry.
But for Rory, it is a sign that things are right there, the stars just need to align (via ESPN):
“I think if I keep working on the things I am working on on the range, that only bodes well for the future. To work on my swing but still go out there and have a really good chance to win, I am proud of that. “I’m excited for the future. I’m playing well. I keep giving myself chances. … I just have to dust myself off and get myself ready for the last three events of the year.”
Things are bound to turn for McIlroy, who will continue to work toward his latest victory.
He will go to the Dunhill Links Championship this weekend. He then has back-to-back events in the Middle East.
McIlroy continued:
“When you get yourself in contention so much, inevitably you’re going to have disappointments. Unfortunately I’m just getting a little too used to feeling what it’s like when you do and hopefully that tide will turn.”
“When I show up at a golf tournament, I sort of know that the field has to beat me to have a chance to win. That’s how it feels. So that’s a pretty good position to be in.”
