2025 Farmers Insurance Open Fantasy Sleeper Report

Those that kept the faith in the elite iron and wedge play of Sepp Straka were rewarded with a 60/1 winner at the American Express. The Austrian found the sizable green complexes in California far more to his liking, opening up a four-shot lead heading into the final round.

And while that cushion was snipped to two by Justin Thomas, in truth Straka never looked in any danger of relinquishing what would become his third PGA TOUR title. The West Coast Swing continues at pace this week with the Farmers Insurance Open, where Matthieu Pavon landed his first PGA TOUR win in just his third start 12 months ago… not bad for a 150/1 outsider!

The Frenchman will return to defend this week, and he might just be pleased to see a fallow field awaiting him – the likes of Xander Schauffele and Collin Morikawa have withdrawn from the action, leaving just five members of the OWGR top 20 (Hideki Matsuyama, Ludvig Aberg, Keegan Bradley, Sahith Theegala, Sungjae Im) behind.

They’ll be looking to crack Torrey Pines, the club in San Diego that brings two host courses to the table. The first is the North Course, which hosts the field across the opening two days, while the South Course, which hosts those opening rounds on rotation with the North, takes exclusivity for the final 36 holes. The South Course is a fascinating layout. Measuring topside of 7,700 yards for its Par 72, the South Course at Torrey Pines is incredibly long and yet boasts narrow fairways, so this can be a good old slog from off the tee.

The Poa Annua greens are on the small side and well protected too, so the real premium this week is to be found in the players’ ball striking – evidenced, perhaps, by the quality of winners at Torrey Pines.

Jon Rahm won the U.S. Open here in 2021, while winners of the Farmers include Max Homa, Patrick Reed, and Marc Leishman in recent years, while even Luke List can be added to the file for elite ball-strikers. Xander Schauffele, Tony Finau, Viktor Hovland, and Keegan Bradley are others that add heft as classy runners-up.

Pavon and List are examples of long odds winners in this event, so will there be another in 2025? We can only hope… so here’s our sleeper shortlist for the 2025 Farmers Insurance Open.

Stephan Jaeger – 60/1 – It was at Torrey Pines 12 months ago that Stephan Jaeger came closest to ending his wait for a PGA TOUR title. Since then, he has broken his duck at the Houston Open, banked T21 at the U.S. Open, and – last time out – finished T3 at the Sony Open, where he finished just one shot from the playoff.

Jaeger also produced his best approach play numbers in a year at the Sony, so back at a course he knows and loved, and where he can free his arms off the tee, the German must be considered a viable contender for the trophy.

Austin Eckroat – 66/1 – If nothing else, long accuracy off the tee and class on approach through the yardage bucket is a useful skillset to possess at Torrey Pines. Austin Eckroat, although not known for blitzkrieg bombs off the tee, did still average more than 300 yards in 2024, where he was also above average in terms of accuracy. As for iron and wedge play… that’s perhaps the strongest weapon in his armory.

But for a poor round at the North Course, Eckroat perhaps would have finished top-20 here a year ago… a useful springboard from which to build, given that he’s won twice on the PGA TOUR since last January.

Mac Meissner – 80/1 – When you’re not qualifying for majors and Signature Events, the chance to play at technical golf courses doesn’t come along all that often. All of which is why Mac Meissner, who evidently has lots of talent as per his statistical makeup, has to shine when he can at layouts like Torrey Pines South.

T5 at Colonial last summer was an example of how quality tee-to-green merchants like Meissner can thrive at classical tests, and he’s just about long enough off the tee to get stuck into Torrey Pines in a similar fashion. With +1.56 on the field on approach at the Sony Open, Meissner continues to drop huge hints as to his talent.

Charley Hoffman – 90/1 – The veteran Californian has had a love-hate relationship with Torrey Pines over the years, but three top-ten finishes highlights what is possible for him here. There’s extra reasons to be bullish in 2025 given that Hoffman has started to producing some excellent golf. He gained more than a combined +2.00 on the field with his ball-striking at the Sony Open, before finishing T5 at the American Express last time out… despite losing strokes on the greens.

Still a big birdie-maker with class through the bag on approach, you wonder if Hoffman’s experience will come in handy this week if Torrey Pines South plays tough?

Kevin Yu – 100/1 – He remains one of the most unpredictable players on the PGA TOUR; a veritable enigma code to try and unravel. After just a tiny sample of five rounds, Kevin Yu ranks second on TOUR for strokes gained off the tee, and this is a player who ranked 36th last season for SG: Approach.

So the ball-striking credentials are in place, and as for putting, he gained +2.07 at the Sanderson Farms Championship – winning his maiden PGA TOUR title there, as well as +1.10 at the RSM Classic. He’s spiking on the greens then, although predicting when his next hot run will come is not an easy business. But, when it all comes together for Kevin Yu, he is a multi-time PGA TOUR winner in the making.
