Major Champion Calls Out Bryson DeChambeau: Be Yourself!
Major Champion Padraig Harrington was in disbelief regarding Bryson DeChambeau’s change of attitude and demeanor during the 2025 Masters and believes it cost him the Green Jacket.
Harrington was shocked by DeChambeau’s lack of ability to be himself on the golf course, criticizing him for changing his strategy and for abandoning the game that got him there in the first case.
The three-time Major winner went on Ireland’s RTE Radio in a show called “Today with Claire Byrne,” discussing what went wrong for DeChambeau:
“What was he thinking on the third hole? Bryson has made his game by being a long hitter. He stands up on the third hole with a one-shot lead, possibly can drive the green, he lays up, makes bogey; Rory drives it, hits driver up to the near the edge of the green and makes his birdie. It was the most bizarre change of personality I’ve ever seen in the game of golf right there in that moment.”
“Bryson coming up with, ‘he didn’t talk to me.’
“Can you imagine going out on a football pitch and saying the guy marking you wasn’t very nice to you.”

DeChambeau had overtaken McIlroy for the lead by the third hole thanks to Rory’s double bogey-par start. DeChambeau started with a par and a birdie on the first two holes.
However, the third hole saw McIlroy go for the green with driver and DeChambeau making a strange decision to lay up with an iron. It was a two shot swing that gave McIlroy the lead.
Harrington was baffled:
“He has different skills but his ego has gone down this road of being a long hitter and he had a chance right there on the third hole, stand up there, burst one down there, it’s a big enough area and he just gave all the momentum back to Rory.”
DeChambeau would eventually fall out of contention as it seemed that he abandoned his game at the worst time: Sunday at the Masters. McIlroy would go on to win and complete the Career Grand Slam.
