PGA Junior League Golf is Expanding Rapidly
Every year, it seems that there is a new, young superstar emerging in the world of golf. The influx of young talent entering the game often comes from getting introduced to the game early on and that is exactly what the PGA Junior League aims to do.
Because of the work done by PGA Junior Golf, there was a record 36,000 participants in the program in 2016. These participants were led by over 2,000 PGA and LPGA professionals in just under 3,000 junior teams that stretched nationwide. The growth represents a 300% increase from the number of participants just three years ago, which featured only 9,000 members on just 740 junior teams.

The PGA Junior Golf program does a lot for advancing the game for youth in the U.S. It is a program that offers the opportunity for boys and girls under the age of 13 the opportunity to learn the game and compete in a fun, social atmosphere. Kids are often put into groups in their own area led by PGA or LPGA professionals that provide expert teaching.
Along with the program’s goal of advancing the sport’s popularity, the PGA Junior League also instills teamwork in its participants. The format of the game is a two-person scramble that allows for a good learning environment. Captains are also able to substitute players throughout the scramble to ensure every person gets a chance to play.
The success of the program is something that is being celebrated among members of the PGA and LPGA. Paul Levy, President of the PGA stated that “PGA Junior League Golf continues to be one of the most dynamic, youth-focused initiatives led by the PGA of America. Thanks to the leadership of PGA and LGPA Professionals nationwide, we expect this exponential growth to continue in 2017.”
Registration for the 2017 Junior League begins in February and it will be interesting to see if more and more young people begin to play the game of golf in the future.
