Just For Fun
Dabo Swinney Falls for the Old Exploding Ball Trick
While golf is typically considered a gentlemen’s sport where spectators are forced to be quiet, it does not mean that players can’t have a little fun. This was the case and point this past weekend with Dabo Swinney.
The Clemson Football Head Coach is fresh off of a national championship win and decided to celebrate with a round of golf at the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl Challenge. Swinney played the round with former Clemson player Steve Fuller and the two did quite well, helping raise about $20,000 for a Clemson University scholarship and the coach’s All in Team Foundation.

While the round was good and much money was raised, the coach may want to improve his mental preparation to the level of his players, as he was the butt of the day’s biggest joke.
After teeing up for a drive, Swinney wasn’t paying attention when someone came up and switched out his ball. The result was Swinney pounding the fake ball with his driver, creating a huge explosion in the tee box.
While certainly unexpected, Swinney had an idea that something was up once he got into his stance.
Dabo was a good sport about the whole situation, shouting “I knew it, you sorry suckers!” immediately after the explosion. It may have been embarrassing for Swinney but he isn’t the first sports star to fall for the trick.
David Ortiz, Ivan Rodriguez & Trevor Consavage Golf/Baseball Trick Shot
David Ortiz Children’s Fund Celebrity Golf event in Punta Cana, DR I had the privilege of being asked to entertain Davids golf event doing a Long Drive and golf trick shot exhibition this passed December. I decided to integrate two of the best hitters in the game into my signature golf/baseball trick shot.
A few years ago, the same trick was pulled on Red Sox legend David Ortiz at a charity event in the Dominican Republic. After watching several players hit trick shots in front of him, Ortiz stepped up to hit his drive only to watch the ball explode on contact. Hopefully, that’ll make Swinney feel better about falling for the same trick.
Make sure to check your ball the next time you tee it up because this is sure to inspire pranksters in golf groups everywhere.
