Steph Curry Misses Cut at Ellie Mae Classic
There was a lot of hype about Steph Curry appearing on the Web.com Tour this week to participate in the Ellie Mae Classic. That hype has now subsided, however, after the first two days.
After starting off the tournament with huge anticipation, Curry will not be able to compete over the weekend after missing the cut at his first professional event. Steph came out and shot back to back 74s on Thursday and Friday that were not enough to keep him in contention for the tournament’s weekend.
While 74 is a pretty poor score for any professional, for Curry, this was a remarkable showing as an amateur in his first event. In fact, Curry actually exceeded many expectations of golf pros and analysts by shooting 74 on both days. While many of these people thought that Steph would make a mockery of the tournament, he actually made these folks eat their words.
Congrats @StephenCurry30 that was impressive I was only joking but you played great. #2TimeMVP #ThistastesTerrible #Respect pic.twitter.com/FWsASPKfDg

One of the men eating his words after Steph’s showing is Dawie Van Der Walt. Van Der Walt watched Curry shoot 74 in the first round and claimed that he would eat his own golf bag if Steph broke 80 in round two. Well, Van Der Walt then tweeted out a picture of himself with a fork and knife over his golf bag. Steve Wheatcroft also said there was no way in hell Steph would shoot lower than 76. After his round, Steph simply responded by saying hell hath frozen over.
Despite all of the hate that the Warriors point guard got from people all week, he did impress the most recent Open Championship winner, Jordan Spieth. “That was awesome what he did yesterday,” Spieth said after his round at the Bridgestone Invitational. “I think he certainly beat most everybody’s expectations, but I don’t think that really surprised him.”
It will be interesting to see if Curry is able to participate in any other events in the coming months and years but he certainly showed he was worthy of the invitation this week and that he is more than just a star basketball player.
