Michelle Wie Undergoes Emergency Surgery to Remove her Appendix

It is not unusual for a golfer to be forced to withdraw from an event due to injury or other unforeseen circumstances. For Michelle Wie, however, the reason for withdrawing from the Canadian Pacific Women’s Open was about as scary as it can get.

Wie was participating in the LPGA tournament all the way into Sunday until she was a surprise withdrawal for the last day of the event. It was especially surprising seeing that Wie was in contention at the tournament, sitting T-23rd and only six shots back of co-leaders Mo Martin and Nicole Broch Larsen. But Wie was forced to end her tournament for an emergency surgery to remove her appendix.

The appendix is not a necessary organ that the body needs to function so Wie won’t miss any significant time or have any long term effects. The reason for appendix removal typically comes from abdominal pain that becomes unbearable. Many athletes have had to deal with this type of surgery in the past, and all have come back as good as new.

After going under the knife Sunday, Wie assured all of her fans that she is ok, posting a picture of herself in hospital on Twitter. Her caption said, “My appendix is out of my body! Been a scary 24 hrs but I just wanna thank the medical staff here in Ottawa for making me feel comfortable!” Keeping in good spirits should help her return to the course sooner rather than later.

While it is good to see that Wie is fine now, the surgery does come at a rather inopportune time. Not only was Wie competing in the Canadian Pacific Women’s Open, she is also having a great year in general. Wie has seven top ten finishes in 17 starts this season and currently sits 30th in the Rolex Rankings and without having to withdraw this weekend, she could have made a sizable jump.

All golf worries aside, we are glad to see Wie is recovering and we can only hope that she is able to return to the LPGA Tour as soon as possible.
