Sergio Garcia Gets Lucky at BMW Championship

Every golfer has a wild story about a remarkable hole that they played that defied all odds. For Sergio Garcia this weekend, that hole came at 18 during the BMW Championship.

While many were mystified by Wesley Bryan’s unbelievably fast round, Sergio took his good ole time to play the 18th as he was playing to advance in the FedExCup. Needing a low score on the hole to advance, Garcia was looking for par on the 585-yard Par-5. On his second shot, however, Garcia hit his shot into a lateral hazard that ended up being a rocky creek near the green. Instead of losing a stroke, however, Garcia was granted a free drop.

Officials ruled that the grandstand interfered with Sergio’s shot and that he could take a free drop. The drop took forever after the ball rolled towards the green twice to a spot Sergio couldn’t get a club on it. So Garcia decided to drop the ball on a rock to take his third shot. That third shot then hit another grandstand surrounding the green, giving him another free drop. Thanks to those drops, Sergio was somehow able to save par.

Despite complaints of how long Sergio took to finish the hole and how he got lucky, he believes he played everything the right way. “I was feeling bad for the people behind me and for Phil because they were waiting,” Garcia said. “But it was an important moment, and I wanted to make sure to … do what was best for me at that time, and obviously within the rules, and that’s what we did.”

Garcia was going into the hole believing that he needed a par to stay in 12th place for the tournament, which would have guaranteed his spot in the TOUR Championship and a shot at the FedExCup. As it turned out, his playing partner, Phil Mickelson, narrowly missed an eagle putt that would have put more pressure on Sergio and he could have advanced with a bogey. The 12th place finish put Sergio in 25th place in overall FedExCup Standings.

Luck or not, Sergio has lived to fight another weekend in his pursuit of the FedExCup. Hopefully, the luck that he got over the weekend will carry over to next week, leading Garcia to a big payday.
