Reigning PGA TOUR Ping Pong King Matt Kuchar Loses to Rookie
Everyone knows Matt Kuchar as a steady competitor on the PGA TOUR, always playing a consistent game and contending in many tournaments. But golf isn’t the only game in which Kooch excels.
That’s right, Matt has also flashed his skills at another sport, ping pong. There are many stories of Kuchar’s crazy skill at the game, including him playing an Olympic champion and holding his own. Kuchar has also dominated matchups against his fellow golfers, reportedly schooling Jordan Spieth in a singles match at the Ryder Cup last year.
Describing the moment when Spieth challenged him to a one on one duel, Kuchar said, “You know, we played mostly doubles. I think Jordan Spieth was the one guy that challenged me to singles, and he got what he knew he was going to get.” And get got he did, as Kuchar annihilated him according to other players. Kuchar also said he dominates the doubles game too, often playing with Bubba Watson who always claims him as a partner.

But even though Kuchar is known as the ping pong phenom on the PGA TOUR, that doesn’t mean that he’s unbeatable.
A video surfaced this week of Kuchar actually losing a match, and to a rookie no less. Kuchar took on rookie Marty Dou in a match while the two were at the WGC-HSBC Champions in China and the 20-year old pulled some slick moves to beat the veteran as you can see in the video.
While this is certainly going to hurt Kuchar’s ping pong reputation, he still beat Dou in the more important reason they were there, the golf tournament. Kuchar finished one-under in a tie for 31st while Dou finished ten shots behind him and tied for 69th. You wouldn’t know those were the results, however, based on the reaction Dou has to his ping pong win.
It’s good to see such a young player have fun beating a PGA TOUR veteran, even if it was in ping pong. Maybe Dou will be able to take some new found confidence and display it in the coming weeks on the golf course.
