Tony Romo Shoots 81 Ahead of PGA TOUR Debut
Ever since Jim Nantz stated that Tony Romo would play on the PGA TOUR this year and Romo confirmed it, expectations have been high. But after his most recent performance, some people may want to temper those expectations.
Romo, who plays golf on a regular basis in his home state of Texas, recently participated in a 36-hole event on the North Texas PGA Players’ Tour. Romo’s first round was a complete disaster, as he shot an 81 on the amateur tour. Tony did not play a full second round, ultimately withdrawing after shooting two over on the front nine before a lengthy rained delay.
As part of Romo’s round, he started off with a quintuple bogey 10 on the second hole of his tournament. He then triple bogeyed on the fifth hole and bogeyed on the the following hole. That put Romo at 10-over par just six holes into his round. His second round wasn’t too bad but in that first nine he still shot over par.

Despite shooting such a poor score, there is reason to believe it was just a rough stretch of holes. After starting off at 10-over, Romo was as steady as you can be, making two birdies and only one more bogey. And his decision to withdraw shouldn’t be of any concern either, as seven other players joined Romo in withdrawing because of the rain delay.
Shooting an 81 in a amateur tournament though doesn’t specifically bode well for Romo later in the month when he’s set to play with the big boys in the Dominican Republic. The Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship won’t be star packed because the WGC-Match Play is the same weekend but professionals are professionals and 81 isn’t going to get the job done on a tougher course.
If Romo is going to be competitive in his PGA debut, he’s definitely going to have to step up his game. Luckily, there are still three weeks until the tournament and plenty of time for Romo to right the ship.
