Samuel L. Jackson, Charles Barkley Will Commentate For “The Match”
Now simply dubbed “The Match,” the hype has been building for the matchup between Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods on pay-per-view in just about a week. And now, the hype is getting even bigger with the announcement of the broadcast team.
It was expected that there would be some big golf pundits to cover the match and that is certainly going to be the case. The lead of the team will be Ernie Johnson, Turner’s go-to man for sports, as he anchors the lead teams for the NBA and MLB broadcasts for the company. He’s also the head golf broadcaster when the PGA Championship is played on TNT.
Outside of Johnson, there are also a few more names you’ll recognize covering the match. Peter Jacobson of NBC/Golf Network and Darren Clarke will be in the booth with Ernie along with two reporters from the field, which will be Shane Bacon and Natalie Gulbis. What is really interesting, however, is the setup for the pre-match show.

The network announced that before the match there will be coverage of the event one hour before Woods and Mickelson tee off. That coverage will include video of warmups and a mix of what Turner calls “sports and entertainment.” The group providing that coverage is far from what you’d expect and leads me to believe there will be a lot more entertainment than analysis.
The pre-tee off show will feature Bleacher Report’s Adam Lefkoe who will be joined by Pat Perez, Charles Barkley, and Samuel L. Jackson. Now that is an interesting group to put together for a golf event. We all know Sir Charles won’t be the best to offer analysis of the event and who knows what Samuel L. Jackson will be doing there other than making fun of Chuck. Pat Perez should be a good median providing good golf analysis with his flashy personality.
If you were on the fence about ordering the $20 pay-per-view, this presentation may put you over the top. The coverage is set to start at 2 p.m. on November 23rd, so make sure you have your schedule cleared and PPV bought or you may miss out on all of this action.
