NASCAR Driver Denny Hamlin Wants A Shot At The PGA TOUR

You just ‘know’ when you got what it takes to compete on the toughest level in golf. Well, at least this guy does.

In recent years we have seen several athletes from other sports attempt to play in professional golf events. While many of these athletes come from baseball or basketball backgrounds, there’s now a NASCAR driver looking for an opportunity.

Car drivers don’t immediately stand out as people with a potential knack for golf but Denny Hamlin is an exception. Hamlin is seen as the best golfer on the NASCAR circuit and has been asked if he would be interested in playing on a sponsor’s exemption as Tony Romo and Steph Curry have. While Hamlin is intrigued by the opportunity, he is politely declining until he feels his game is ready for the challenge.

If I had to guess, I’d say that point may be coming up in the near future. Hamlin has played in a few pro-ams, finishing second with his team at the Wells Fargo Pro-Am at the beginning of May. On top of that Hamlin says that he is certain that he’ll be competing in a few more events this year, it just depends on his schedule.

Hamlin is also set to get more work throughout the year through a monthly event he and Rickey Stenhouse Jr. have created called the “Golf Guys Tour.” Originally created four years ago, the tour is made up of a few drivers as well as some members of Hamlin’s home courses. With all that golf to be played, Hamlin will definitely be able to sharpen his game.

Before he gets carried away with his golf aspirations though, Hamlin has some business to finish on the NASCAR circuit. After going 47 races without a win, Hamlin has picked up two victories this season, including the infamous Daytona 500. With Hamlin contending for the NASCAR Cup, any professional golf appearances will be on hold.

Personally, I think it’s smart for Hamlin to wait out the sponsor exemptions until he’s ready because it will limit the chance that he embarrasses himself. The best time for Hamlin to play will be after race season and if he does accept an exemption this year, we’ll certainly be tracking how well he plays.
