LPGA TOUR: Michelle Wie’s Career Could Be Nearing the End

While the PGA TOUR is stacked with superstars that seem to always be in the limelight, the LPGA Tour and its players often get overlooked. But for one of the most recognizable names in women’s golf, her career may be coming to a close.

There have been few LPGA Tour pros that have captivated audiences like Michelle Wie. A young budding star when she became a professional golfer in 2005 at the young age of 15 years old, Wie was the most promising golfer to burst onto the scene in years. With all that potential, however, came enormous pressure and an injury record that derailed much of that promise.

Injuries have always been a part of Wie’s career even when she was dominating the LPGA Tour. The latest injury that Wie, now 29, suffered has been an avulsion fracture, bone chips and nerve entrapment in her right hand and wrist. That injury has kept her out for the last few months but Wie stepped onto the tee again this week at the Women’s PGA Championship. The results were not good, however, as her first round ended with her at +12.

After the round, Wie was emotional talking about her future, not knowing how much longer she can play. “It’s hard,” she said. “It’s just one of those situations where I’m not, you know, I’m not entirely sure how much more I have left in me, so even on the bad days, I’m just, like, trying to take time to enjoy it. But it’s tough.”

If Wie’s career really is coming to an end, she will certainly go down as one of the most influential players to tee up on the LPGA Tour. 

Michelle won five total events on the LPGA Tour, including her only major in 2014 when she won the Women’s Open Championship. But even more so, she will be remembered for inspiring many young women looking to make a career in sports.

Over the last two days, my phone and my inbox has been overflowing with messages of support and love. And even though I was having trouble playing, the crowds were cheering me on, applauding the good shots, and yelling phrases of encouragement when I was struggling. And even after not performing well at all, kids were still waiting in the rain to get my autograph and a picture with me while telling me that they were still so proud of me. It’s looking like a long shot that Wie will make the cut after her horrific first round but she still has a lot more tournaments to go this year. And even if she thinks her career could be winding down, we certainly hope that she plays for as long as she can.
