OUCH! John Daly Rushed To Hospital After Brown Recluse Spider Bite
This past weekend is one of John Daly’s favorite of the year, as the Fourth of July means a lot of all-American fun and, of course, a whole lot of drinking. But Daly’s fun weekend was cut short after he was rushed to the emergency room.
Daly tweeted out that it was probably the craziest event of his entire life, and that’s saying something, when he was spending some time in England to prepare for the Open Championship. Apparently, while he was there he was bitten by a brown recluse spider without knowing it. Then last Friday, Daly started experiencing some symptoms of an illness and was rushed to a local hospital for surgery.
As Daly says, the surgeons began “removing what developed into a major infection in my abdominal area and treated (him) for early sepsis all from a brown recluse!” Everything ended up working out for Daly as the surgery was successful and he has since been released from the hospital with a new nickname of “Spider Pro” that his caddie has dubbed him.

For those that don’t know, a brown recluse is a spider that is native to North America and is one of only three in this part of the world, along with the black widow and Chilean recluse, that have enough venom to cause severe medical harm. So it is likely that Daly was bitten before his trip to the U.K. and only started to feel the symptoms once his vacation began.
Ironically, that just adds to a bad week for Daly. Earlier this week we wrote about how Daly was denied the use of a cart at The Open Championship for his arthritis but that he was going to attempt to play through the pain and walk Royal Portrush. That plan changed, possibly because of this incident, and he has since withdrawn. He will, however, play in the Barbasol Classic in Lexington, KY, which is being played opposite of The Open.
For how bad of a week it’s been for Long John, we’re happy to hear that he’s ok and still able to play golf in the near future. Hopefully, that will be the last of Daly’s struggles this year and he’ll be able to continue competing on the PGA TOUR and Champions Tour.
