Where do you practice? Do you put in work at the range or at your club? How about some guy’s backyard? No seriously, some guy’s backyard is an actual place you can go and practice your short game.

Many of us dream of having a putting green in our backyard and some of us even get the approval from our significant other to put one in.

Not many people have the space or the finances to build a golf course in their backyard. Four friends (Ben, Evan, Zach and Mark) came up with the idea to turn Zach’s backyard into a little piece of heaven. They are calling this unique golf experience Brough Creek National (BCN) and it opens on October 6th.

Besides the amazing name, the cool thing about BCN is that it is completely crowd sourced.

After BCN’s founding members had the idea they shared their plans with anyone that wanted to help. They have raised over $21,000 and it took 1100 plus hours to build BCN. Because of the generosity of community, the course is completely free.

“It’s the community’s course” they said when I asked them about the project. Anyone who wants to play it is welcomed if one of the founding members is there. Because this isn’t a public track, its Zach’s personal property they do need to have someone there. If the players are respectful of the property, they can enjoy it.

BCN utilizes 6 greens and 7 tee boxes to make this short game course possible. BCN plans to have lots of events throughout the year to bring as many opportunities for golf lovers to come and enjoy “some guys backyard.”

The BCN founding members are in their late 20’s and they are helping put an end to the “millennials are killing golf” cliché.  Not only are they lovers of the game but they are “regular folks just trying to do something different in the game. Bringing folks together is the most important part.”

This passion project is beyond cool in my opinion. Not only have they built a golf course from scratch with no experience, but they are sharing it with people who want to enjoy the game. Because it’s a short game course in Zach’s back yard, anyone, at any age can enjoy it. If you visit someguysbackyard.com you can even apply to become a member. I did it and I don’t even live in the Kansas City area.

Ed started playing golf when he was 18. It started out as a hobby and something he liked to do but by 2014 it had turned into a full blown obsession. Since then Ed has committed himself to improving and learning more about the game. He doesn’t work in the golf industry, he’s not a teaching pro, he’s a guy who just loves the game and enjoys sharing his thoughts with others who share the same passion.
