Jon Rahm Used Tiger’s Wedge to Win in Dubai

Many will be happy to see that Jon Rahm is back on top of a leaderboard as he struggled at points this last season. But what may be more interesting is the club choice that Rahm used to get his win.

Rahm, among many other players, attended the DP World Tour Championship and Race to Dubai this past week and was the one player who was able to leave with a trophy. After a season that saw him not live up to expectations on the PGA TOUR, Rahm has been killing it on the European Tour, winning three events since July. But in Dubai, Rahm may have been helped by one of the world’s best.

Tiger Woods and Jon Rahm don’t come off as having any close connection other than both being top-notch members of the PGA TOUR but the two have now used the same wedge in competition. Now, it’s not like Rahm raided Tiger’s bag and took one of his old clubs to use, but he did end up using an exact replica provided by TaylorMade.

Earlier in his career, Tiger’s preferences were so specific that wedges were being made specifically for him because he wanted to do such intricate things with his shots. As Tiger describes it, “Then once those [wedges] were done — so 16 go-arounds — now we have to start it all over again, because they can’t get anymore spin on them,” Woods said. TaylorMade eventually found a much simpler way to do this and started to keep some prototypes.

This is where Rahm comes in. Rahm is also a TaylorMade player and was looking for a new lob wedge for his game when he came across the “TW11.” Rahm was a fan of the club and decided to give it a run on the course in Dubai this week, giving him a “super flop” shot that would be otherwise available. And apparently it worked well for him as he got the win!

It’s unknown if Rahm will be keeping the wedge with the TW11 grind for any other events but I would think it’s likely. And for any other TaylorMade players, Tiger’s grinds may be something they want to look more into for the upcoming season.
