RELENTLESS: Patrick Reed Continues To Get Heckled At Events

With a new year and a new decade being rung in this past week, many people are hoping and trying to leave their past back in last decade. Unfortunately, this isn’t the story for Patrick Reed.

By now, everyone seems to know the story that has led towards Reed’s latest criticism. It’s been over a month since Reed was involved in the scandal. That being at the bunker of the Hero Challenge, where it appears he intentionally moved sand from behind his ball to create a better shot. Even after all this time, the heckling just won’t stop.

After a lackluster performance in the Presidents Cup, Reed had a nice rebound outing this past weekend at the Sentry Tournament of Champions. Reed ended up tied with Justin Thomas for the lead and entered a sudden-death playoff. That’s where the worst of the heckling was picked up by cameras. After Reed missed a birdie putt on a playoff hole, a fan could be heard shouting “Cheater!” from the stands.

While the scream didn’t come during Reed’s backstroke or follow-through, it still garnered the attention of Reed, who immediately glared in that direction and muttered something to himself. Afterward, Thomas made his birdie putt to win the tournament. Reed did not acknowledge the incident in his post-tournament interview and acted as if it didn’t happen.

For Reed, it seems like something he will have to address or it is going to reach a tipping point. His caddie has already gotten into an altercation with a fan over heckling, which left him suspended. The jeers have continued and progressively getting worse with every round.

Reed doesn’t seem to have any interest in changing his story on the matter so it looks like we’re heading for a moment where something will have to give. Either Reed will own up to his mistake or he deals with the heckling every week.

If I was a betting man, I’d say the latter is more likely because Reed has been mired in personal issues for years. Hopefully, no matter how long the criticism lasts, Reed will be able to tune out the noise and play top-notch golf just as he did this past weekend.
