Twitter can be a large dark wormhole of content for anyone that’s looking to lose track of time. Every now and then, a great story comes from the social media site that makes us laugh. This time it is about Phil Mickelson’s college days.

One of the popular things to do on Twitter now is to pose a question for hundreds and thousands of people to respond on a big thread. One question that was posed was: “Tell me a story about yourself that sounds like a lie but is absolutely true”. Someone named “Rick Fil-A” responded, saying that he was once in a limo with Phil Mickelson, which happened to get stuck in traffic. Mickelson later called his agent to see if they could get a helicopter to pick them up.

It sounds to me like a crazy lie but Mickelson himself chimed in to confirm that it was indeed, a true story. What is even more strange is that he added that this was after a Guns N’ Roses concert in 1992. I could totally see Phil getting down with Axl Rose and Slash, but when you put the timing together, Phil was asking his agent for a helicopter when he was still an amateur and a student at Arizona State. That’s a lot of sway for someone who’s still in college.

Unfortunately, the helicopter that Phil had hoped for never came and was probably an impossible ask from the very beginning. However, it all worked out for Phil as he later added more to the story, saying that that was the same morning that Phil met his wife Amy. He said when he pulled in to his stop, Amy was walking to her 7:40 a.m. class. And the rest is history.

Now, for those who still think this story could be a big fib, the great folks at Golf Digest did the research to see if all of it added up. They proved that Guns N’ Roses was on Tour in 1992 and they did visit Tempe where Phil and Amy were both attending Arizona State. If you look at the facts, this looks like one of the greatest and most Phil Mickelson stories of all time.

While I’m sure that Phil isn’t having wild nights at concerts anymore, I bet he could definitely get that helicopter now if he called. Regardless, this is a great story and I hope he explains it more on one of his episodes of Phireside in the future.
