Fantasy Golf Picks, Odds, and Predictions for the RBC Heritage

RBC Heritage Fantasy Preview

Golf may have been gone for three months, but it hasn’t lost its status as the ultimate sport for testing nerve and skill.

At the Charles Schwab Challenge there was no lack of skill on show, but as for nerve – well, you might conclude that both Collin Morikawa and Xander Schauffele lost theirs as the winning line beckoned.

Schauffele should have won in regulation – he made a mess of his final four holes, including a soul-destroying lip-out on the seventeenth, and then – embroiled in a play-off with Daniel Berger – Morikawa also lipped out a regulation four-footer to hand his opponent victory.

It was Berger’s third PGA TOUR title, all of which have come in June bizarrely, and confirmation that a player who was hitting some really good form prior to the coronavirus break is back and firing.

There was a time when the 27-year-old was even more highly rated than his peers like Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas, but a raft of injuries and a loss of confidence have hampered Berger’s progress immensely. His win on Sunday suggests those demons are now far behind him.

This first event back was merely an appetizer for what is to come over the next few months on the PGA TOUR, but it certainly provided plenty of talking points nonetheless. We found out who had been grinding on the range, who had been practicing their putting (is Jordan Spieth ready to hit top form again), who had been hitting the weights (Bryson DeChambeau averaged more than 50 yards longer off the tee than anybody else on Thursday) and who, simply, hadn’t picked their clubs up in weeks (*cough* Webb Simpson *cough*).

Anyway, we move on and it’s off to Hilton Head this week for the rescheduled RBC Heritage at Harbour Town Links in South Carolina.

Last Week’s Fantasy Results

Last week we lost Webb to the cut and had no ‘Berger’ on our plate. With Xander and J-Rose’s T3; we caught a little bit of a lift but not enough without Berger on the card.

So far our average weekly roster earnings for the season sits at $975,116 (over 21 events).

On a side note, it was nice to see Trevor from the Pin High podcast shout the Berger win on last week’s episode:

2020 RBC Heritage Field

Traditionally, it has proven difficult for the organizers of this event to attract a high-quality field given its normal position in the schedule a week after The Masters.

No such problems in 2020 mean that, once again, a stellar collection of players will hit the Links at Harbour Town.

A mixed bag at Colonial will have given Rory McIlroy plenty of food for thought, and he will be joined in the headscratchers’ camp this week by the likes of Jon Rahm, Brooks Koepka and Dustin Johnson.

Xander Schauffele, Collin Morikawa Bryson DeChambeau and Justin Thomas are coming in hot, while Patrick Reed, Justin Rose and Sungjae Im will be looking to capitalize on strong showings in Texas.

This Week’s Course Preview

With the wind largely down and the greens much softer than usual, Colonial was more of a leisurely unwind than most were expect – don’t anticipate similarly benign conditions at Hilton Head.

The breeze gets up in this part of the world and with many of the holes at the Harbour Town Links located on the coast, that can have a real impact on shot selection.

The more in-land holes are tree-lined, so there is some protection there, however that doesn’t mean the players can breathe a complete sigh of relief – after all, Harbour Town was designed by one Pete Dye.

Admittedly, this is not his most devilish layout, but -12 has been good enough to win here for the last two seasons, and that gives a flavor of the complexity of the challenge.

The Dye trademark – smaller-than-average greens – is present, as are some deep bunkers and sweeping doglegs.

Otherwise, this plays like a traditional Links with sprawling fairways and closely mown run-off areas around the greens, and at 7,100 yards for its Par 71 the layout is a fair size.

Weather Forecast for Hilton Head, SC

It’s the most typical of Hilton Headian weather that will greet the field this week.

The temperatures will sit at around 80-88°F for the four days, with sunny spells and cloud playing out intermittently.

The wind tends to gust at higher strength than the speeds predicted by the forecast this close to the Atlantic, but for what it’s worth the prediction is for a breeze of 7-9 mph on Thursday and Friday, which could climb to as high as 12 mph across the weekend.

Last Year’s Results for RBC Heritage

A year after the 200/1 shot Satoshi Kodaira cashed in on a weak field to land the tartan jacket, fellow Asian C.T. Pan also stuck it to the odds-makers when he took first place at a cool Vegas price of 160/1.

An outstanding second round of 65 had shoved the Chinaman into the picture, and while his Saturday 69 kept him in the frame it was his closing 67, which featured five birdies, that ultimately took care of business.

Pan’s first PGA TOUR title came at the expense of Matt Kuchar, whose bogey at 17 ultimately ended his aspirations of victory.

All of the above came in the wake of an extraordinary meltdown from Dustin Johnson, who look poised to romp home before an astonishing round of 77 on Sunday – which included a run of +7 from holes 11-15 – put paid to that.

This Week’s Fantasy Notes for RBC Heritage

While we switch to Bermuda greens from the Bentgrass of Colonial, there are a lot of similar profiling techniques to bring forward from last week.

Firstly, finding the fairway is a major advantage – the rough is left long and stringy at Harbour Town, and it really is the stuff of nightmares to play out of.

Approaching these small greens, especially in a crosswind, is far more agreeable from the short stuff too. Trouble lurks for any errant iron play.

That said, there will naturally be some missed greens, and one profile we really like at Harbour Town are the clever chippers and scramblers who can produce a bit of magic, knock it close and move on to the next hole.

That’s probably the only thing that Kodaira, Pan and Wesley Bryan have in common – feel around the greens – although be under no illusions we expect a higher grade of player to triumph this time around.

Form at other Pete Dye tracks is of limited relevance, seeing as most of his layouts are found inland, but if you are looking for correlating courses then maybe Pebble Beach, Waialae and Sea Island are of some significance.

Top 5 Picks/Odds to Win RBC Heritage

Top Tier Pick:

Justin Rose (Odds: 30/1, FPPG: 61.8, GPFP: 49.43 Salary: $9,200)

There was very little wrong with Justin Rose’s game at Colonial, and indeed there looked to be plenty right with it – he has clearly been working hard during the season’s suspension.

He gained strokes in all departments on the field, and signed off on Sunday by gaining a whopping +4.22 strokes from tee-to-green in the final round.

With his putter behaving, Rose becomes a major player again and particularly so at a layout where short game is at a premium – there are few that can match the Englishman in this department.

A perennially strong performer at Pete Dye tracks, Rose’s career is moving in the right direction again and he will be itching to get another PGA TOUR title under his belt.

Key Stats:

  • Par 5 Birdie or Better Leaders – 5th
  • Approaches from 100-125 yards – 25th
  • SG: Around-the-Green – 43rd
Top-Tier Pick #2:

Patrick Reed (Odds: 30/1, FPPG: 82.7, GPFP: 66.19 Salary: $8,800)

A wind-affected golf course where short game is key….Patrick Reed is a no-brainer of a pick.

His record in Links golf, both in the USA and in Britain, is outstanding, and Reed is a player who really thrives when the wind is blowing.

His short game is better than most, that is beyond doubt, and he is simply playing very good golf right now – a winner in Mexico three starts ago, he has since posted T15 at the Arnold Palmer and T7 last week.

His short game at Colonial, especially over the weekend, was in absolutely outstanding shape, and Reed looks ready to contend once more.

Key Stats:

  • SG: Putting – 2nd
  • Scoring Average – 7th
  • SG: Around-the-Green – 25th
Mid-Tier Pick #1:

Tyrrell Hatton (Odds: 55/1, FPPG: 93.3, GPFP: 74.60 Salary: $8,000)

A fantastic sleeper option this week, given that most will overlook him, Tyrrell Hatton is a tremendous Links exponent with a sublime short game.

A two-time winner on the Links in Scotland, Hatton has said he is far more comfortable on Bermuda greens and so that is an interesting point to note this week.

Having won the Arnold Palmer a few months ago, confidence will surely be at a all-time high for the Englishman, and he certainly has the game to thrive in the wind of South Carolina.

Key Stats:

  • Total Driving – 3rd
  • Scoring Average – 3rd
  • SG: Around-the-Green – 12th
Mid-Tier Pick #2:

J.T. Poston (Odds: 90/1, FPPG: 65.8, GPFP: 52.60 Salary: $7,500)

A wind lover who tends to thrive at less-than-driver, small green golf courses, the ‘Postman’ is a must play this week.

He goes about his business quietly but there is nothing short of confidence about Poston’s game, a player who is maturing nicely into a consistent Tour event challenger.

The Wyndham Championship winner can be hamstrung by a lack of length, but that won’t be the case at Harbour Town where he already has a top-10 finish to his name.

In excellent touch at Colonial, we would expect Poston to kick on from his T10 return there.

Key Stats:

  • SG: Putting – 13th
  • Scoring Average – 30th
  • Driving Accuracy – 71st
Low-Tier Pick:

Brian Harman (Odds: 120/1, FPPG: 70.2, GPFP: 56.12 Salary: $7,200)

The Georgia Bulldog played some good golf at Colonial last week, and if he had driven the ball better he would surely have improved upon his T23 finish.

Harman’s short game looked in particularly fine order, and with a top-10 to his name already at the Harbour Town Links he certainly catches the eye at such a bargain basement price.

One of the most accurate drivers around, Harman has made 11 cuts from his 13 starts this season and at a lower price point he should prove to be a fantastically-reliable operator.

Key Stats:

  • Scrambling – 30th
  • SG: Putting – 57th
  • Driving Accuracy – 59th

Sleeper Pick for RBC Heritage

Viktor Hovland (Odds: 66/1, FPPG: 61.7, GPFP: 49.47 Salary: $7,600)

A young man with a fine record at the coastal Pebble Beach, Viktor Hovland also cantered home in the low-grade Puerto Rico Open to prove his suitability for this kind of golf.

The Norwegian is a hit-and-miss kind of player, but at windy resort layouts like Harbour Town he could prove to be a value play as the years roll by.

A phenomenal driver of the ball, Hovland is also a streaky putter and so if he can create opportunities for himself – his iron game was in good order at Colonial – then he could compile some handy scores.

Key Stats:

  • Driving Accuracy – 34th
  • SG: Approach – 51st
  • SG: Putting – 72nd

Alternative Sleeper Pick for RBC Heritage

Christiaan Bezuidenhout (Odds: 100/1, FPPG: 65.7, GPFP: 52.54 Salary: $7,200)

Something of a left-field pick, the South African has a tremendous range of chips and bunts in his locker, and he should enjoy the test presented at Harbour Town.

Bezuidenhout would have won the high-class Dubai Desert Classic earlier in the year but for a mistake as the winning line approached, but here is a guy who has won at Valderrama and who has a bank of fine form in windy conditions to his name.

You may not take much notice of these things, but Bezuidenhout is now ranked inside the world’s top 50 players according to the OWGR, and that is testament to his fine progress.

Key Stats:

  • N/A
