Fantasy Golf Picks, Odds, and Predictions for the Memorial Tournament 2015

The Memorial Tournament 2015 Preview

All the big guns are in town this week for what some call the season’s “6th major” at Jack’s most prized course.

The smoking hot Jordan Spieth and recent PLAYERS Champ Rickie Fowler are looking forward to the big stage again in preparation for the U.S Open in two weeks.

Jordan Spieth is still trying to to become the 2014-2015 season’s first three-time winner and has a handful of runner-ups under his belt as well.  Fowler comes in off a T30 finish at the Irish Open and sets out to claim his first multiple-win season.  Most also know that Tiger Woods will play in the Memorial Tournament this week, an event he loves so much and has dominated in the past

Also in the field will Jason Day who hopes to play well this week after dizziness forced him to withdraw from Byron Nelson late last week.  Day’s wife, Ellie, grew up about an hour north of Columbus so this is sort of like a homecoming for him.

After this week’s event the PGA TOUR will head to Tennessee for the FedEx St. Jude Classic before the U.S. Open commences on June 18th.

Last Week’s Fantasy Results

A slew of unexpected late withdrawals last week forced us to sub-in some new names at the 11th hour.  We’re happy to report that one of those players, Brandt Snedeker, notched us T6 and earned some high quality fantasy points (93) on the week.

Our sleeper pick Brooks Koepka finished T16 and earned 91 points helping us finish the week with two players within the Top 16 and only one missed cut of seve picks (including sleepers).

Although last week’s weak field and last minute subsitutions certainly made for a challenge, our selections were still strong enough to keep up a lofty $1,032,059 weekly fantasy earnings average and we currently have seven picked winners on the season.

The Field

Look for another robust “major like” field this week at Jack’s house for the Memorial Tournament with headliners including Masters champ Jordan Spieth, THE PLAYERS champion Rickie Fowler, and Tiger Woods, who won this event a total of five times including his three-peat from 99-01.

Tiger, Spieth, and Fowler will join defending champ Hideki Matsuyama and in total there will be 15 of the top 25 players in the OWGR present in the field this week.

Other notables to look out for this week are Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els, Jason Day and Justin Rose.

The Course

Muirfield Village Golf Club measures in at 7,392 yards and plays as a par 72.  This eloquent design was brought to life by Jack Nicklaus and has hosted some big time events including the Ryder Cup (1987), Solheim Cup (1998), and Presidents Cup (2013).

Muirfield Village has consistently ranked among America’s top 20 courses and the world’s top 50 and will remain part of the PGA TOUR schedule for many years to come.

Weather Forecast for Dublin, OH

Expect beautiful, dry weather this week in Dublin, OH for the Memorial.

The weather is calling for four great days of 80 degrees, low wind, and very small chances of rain.  With that in mind, you can be sure that Muirfield Village will play fast, true, and very challenging this week.

The Memorial Tournament 2014 Results

Last year Hideki Matsuyama won his first PGA TOUR event after beating Kevin Na with a par on the first extra hole in a sudden death playoff.  Matsuyama dropped a birdie on the 72nd hole to finish with a 3-under-par 69 to pull even with Na who carded a final round 64 two hours earlier.

Some believe that the delay in time that Na spent waiting for Matsuyama to finish his round may have been the deciding factor in Na’s extra hole collapse.

Here’s what happened last year in case you missed it:

Where to Play Fantasy Golf this Week

Here are a few fantasy leagues we recommend this week for their nice payouts and inexpensive entry fees:

  • DraftKings PGA $250K Drive The Green – A usual favorite, this $3 entry now has an even sweeter reward!  Usually this event pays the winner $10K, but this week DraftKings is giving the 1st place winner $100,000!  Grab a spot now before it fills up.
  • DraftKings PGA $2.5M Millionaire Maker SUPER Satellite $1 Entry: For the price of a cup of coffee at McDonald’s you can get into a qualifier for the U.S. Open event which is set to pay out $2.5 million dollars in cash prizes.  Heck, for $1 dollar why not scramble a roster a few times and try 5 entries…it could just lead to an overnight fortune come June!  In fact, if you remember back to The Masters, the guy who took home the $1 million first prize won his way into that event on a $1 satellite.  This event has a max capacity of 2,300 entrants but we doubt it will get that high.  Regardless, it’s wise to get your entry in early so you avoid the chance of being locked out.  The top 100 players in this week’s satellite will get a free ticket to the big game.

This Week’s the Memorial Tournament Fantasy Notes

Muirfield Village ranked as the hardest par 72 in a non-major over the last two seasons.  The key this week is getting distance off the tee to shorten some of the long holes.

This week we’re using our secret recipe to calculate Putting, Short Game, Accuracy, and Power to size up our best five players to win with two Sleeper Picks but check out our new Weekly Fantasy Golf Stats page for a complete breakdown including our exclusive Golficity Projected Fantasy Points (GPFP) calculation for every player in the field this week.

Top 5 Picks/Odds to Win the Memorial Tournament

  • Jordan Spieth (Golficity Odds 4/1 FPPG 88.4 Salary $12,500): We’ve been picking Spieth a lot lately as our horse pick and we see no reason yet not to continue that trend—after all who has been better on TOUR lately?  His high price tag may shy a lot of people away from picking him due to crowding your roster, but we’ll give you a roster idea with and without him this week below.  Spieth had a T19 here last year and the FedExCup leader is currently first in adjusted scoring and par-4 scoring.  Jordan is also fifth in one-putt percentage and third in three-putt avoidance.  Look for him to continue that trend this week at Muirfield Village.
  • Jason Day (Golficity Odds 8/1 FPPG 90.5 Salary $10,800):  Day is a Westerville Ohio resident with local knowledge.  Not many sites are touting Jason this week but we have him at on our list in Golficity Projected Fantasy Points (GPFP) coming in right behind Spieth with 102.27.  Remember that he pulled out of the AT&T Byron Nelson last week due to dizziness, but something tells us he’ll be good to go this week.  He’s currently the TOUR leader in birdie average and ranks fourth in Driving Distance—a stat we love this week.  Also keep in mind that Day ranks second in both the All-Around and in Putting Average.  We feel he should be priced right below Spieth so getting him at only $10,800 this week is a steal.
  • Kevin Na (Golficity Odds 16/1 FPPG 69.4 Salary $9,000): Na is a stellar option in the $9,000 slot having some past success here at Muirfield and a real decent run so far this season.  In fact, he falls under our category of “Top 5 guys on TOUR that are due for a win soon.”  Last year Na fell just short in his playoff loss to Matsuyama where he ranked fourth in scrambling, third in par-4 scoring and T2 in par-5 scoring.  Kevin has seven straight top 20s in stroke-play starts and ranks fourth on TOUR in Putting Average.  We want those type of stats from our fantasy players this week for sure.
  • Patrick Reed (Golficity Odds 28/1 FPPG 78.7 Salary $8,700): Reed is sizzling with 93.68 GPFP this week and ranks fourth on our radar for best picks to win.   We love the low price tag, however, his inconsistency and the cooling off worry us a tiny bit—but that hasn’t stopped him in the past from bouncing back and winning the big events.  He only missed one cut this season and has been a fantasy stud the whole way.  Reed ranks 12th in Strokes Gained Total and second in Overall Putting Average.  Granted that he has been slipping out of the spotlight lately but Muirfield is a course where he can regain some confidence and play well.  Patrick is a first timer at Muirfield but that shouldn’t stop you from adding him to your roster this week.
  • Charley Hoffman (Golficity Odds 38/1 FPPG 69.4 Salary $8,400): Hoffman is the silent assassin that sits quietly in the weeds and then turns up the dial to help fantasy players win some serious money.  He hasn’t won since the fall series, but he’s coming off of a T2 last week and his game looks to be fined tuned for Jack’s event.  Hoffman is our seventth highest ranked player in GPFP this week with 87.39 and comes in having made six consecutive cuts.  For the price, we love having him on our team this week in tandem with any of the names below to help round out the squad.

Sleeper Pick/Odds to Win the Memorial Tournament

  • Brooks Koepka (Golficity Odds 44/1 FPPG 69.4 Salary $8,000): Koepka has one only missed cut (plus one WD) and has three Top 10s including a win this season.  He made a run last week until he fell back to a T16 but his game looked pretty solid with his 3rd round 64 last Saturday.  Overall, Brooks is a solid player with tons of fantasy potential and a really nice price tag.  Like Reed, he’s a first-timer, but that shouldn’t matter since he won the WM Phoenix Open where he debuted as well.  He hits the ball a mile and crushes Par 5s which helps him lead the tour in Eagles.  He’s a solid putter and his game is perfect for MVGC.  It’s also worth noting that he ranks 10th in GPFP this week with a solid 78.60.

Salary Cap League Sleeper Pick/Odds to Win the Memorial Tournament

  • Russell Henley (Golficity Odds 50/1 FPPG 69.4 Salary $7,400): Henley is a name that may not be thrown out too much this week, but hey, you subscribe to our picks for our inside knowledge and out of the box thinking right?  Henley is a solid roster edition at $7,400 this week and is coming in with Top 25s in his last two starts with four in his last six.  He’s currently T10 in strokes gained putting and comes in at a solid 11th on our list for GPFP right behind Koepka, that’s good for a $94.37 per fantasy point this week.
