2018 Mayakoba Golf Classic Fantasy Sleeper Report
As if we needed any further proof, Bryson DeChambeau showed why only the select few golfers on this planet can be classed as genuine, world class studs.
These guys just make things happen. There’s no ‘close but no cigar’ for Bryson and the other elite players, no choking and absolutely no excuses.
Take Sunday at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open. DeChambeau shared the overnight lead, and in good conditions a whole host of players put in low scores to get into the mix.
But did the crumble? Absolutely not. He stuck to his guns, stayed true to the principles which had taken him to three wins in eleven starts, eagled the sixteenth – a huge help! – and stayed strong to the last to bag yet another title for his impressive resumé.
Like we say, Bryson is a prime contender for the big ones in 2019.
He sits out this week, and misses out on one of the most aesthetically-pleasing properties on the PGA TOUR.
El Camaleon, found in the Playa del Carmen resort on Mexico’s east coast, offers coastal holes overlooking the azure Caribbean Sea and inland holes that wind through mangroves, tropical plantations and more.
The players love it here – especially the robes they get to wear on the balconies overlooking many of the holes, and the good vibes continue in what is a fairly comfortable test of ball-striking if the heavy winds stay away.
The forecast is good, and so the only real challenge facing the players is getting used to the Paspalum grass, which tends to run slightly slower than Bentgrass or Bermuda.
The greens here are pretty small too, but they are largely flat and receptive so there won’t be any chipping demons to be found.
Really, this is an approach play shootout, where efficiency with your irons is key to creating birdie opportunities. The rather eclectic collection of recent champions here – Patton Kizzire, Charley Hoffman, Pat Perez, Graeme McDowell and Harris English – suggests that anybody who can string four decent rounds together might be in with a chance!
And so with that in mind, who are the sleepers we are getting onside ahead of the Mayakoba Golf Classic?
