McIlroy Talks Tiger and More

In a very thorough and fascinating interview with the Independent’s Paul Krimmer, Rory opens up about everything from the Olympics, his perfect day, and his relationship with Tiger Woods.

It really is a great conversation and I highly recommend reading the entire interview. Rory is a thoughtful and interesting person when he isn’t at a podium being peppered with less-than-thoughtful questions.

Inevitably, the conversation steers to Tiger Woods and the relationship he and Rory have.

Rory wants nothing to do with the level of fame and pressure that Woods deals with on a daily basis.

“I wouldn’t trade places with Tiger Woods for all the money in the world,” explains McIlroy, “I’ve seen what his life is like in Florida. I’ve played golf with him and said: ‘What are you doing tonight? Do you want to come and have dinner with us?’ And he can’t. He just can’t. And for me that’s unfathomable. I could not live like that.”

McIlroy also considers Tiger not just a peer, but in fact, a friend. Although, that isn’t to say the two aren’t competitive with one another.

“I remember being out to dinner with him in New York after this thing we had done for Nike. It was September ’14 but obviously the Masters was (on his radar) and he says: ‘I’m not going to let you win that slam.’ I said: ‘You’re not going to beat me.’ So we had this back-and-forth about some of the guys he’s beaten to win Majors and I said: ‘You’ve never had to face someone like me”, said Rory.

Let’s hope we get to see that battle actually unfold at Augusta this Spring.
