Round 2 Recap: FedEx St. Jude Classic

We told you on Wednesday not to count Rory McIlroy out.

Mr. “World No. 2” is fighting to become No.1 again by snapping his string of three straight missed cuts Friday, shooting a -5 to take the lead in Memphis. He birdied three of the last four holes and had an eagle to match his lowest PGA Tour round this year with a 65.  It must be a good feeling for the young Irishman, as he stated, “It’s nice to see my name on that part of the leaderboard.”

No pro golfer has ever won a PGA Tour event and went back-to-back with a U.S. Open victory.  We know McIlroy isn’t thinking about this accomplishment but rather just trying to keep it simple and win one tournament at a time.  McIlroy said, “This is really what I wanted heading into next week (U.S. Open).”  Let’s see if he can keep his head in it this weekend.

After a first round lead, Jeff Maggert is now T2 with J.B. Holmes and Kevin Stadler at 6 under.  John Merrick, whom also had a first round lead, finished the day with a 69 to sit T5 with Chad Campbell and Kevin Kisner.

Other notables such as Davis Love III and Padraig Harrington finished at 4 under while John Daly sits at T12 with a -3.

Golficity’s Pick: Zach Johnson missed the cut.
