FedEx St. Jude Classic: Round 1 Recap

We told you not to count out Rory McIlroy just yet.  Rory, who has missed 3 straight cuts while sitting at No. 2 in the world, finished Round 1 T10 at -2 with a 68.

“It felt like the best round of golf I played in a while” said the 23 year old in a post round interview. “The scoring doesn’t seem to look that good, so -2 is a good start…”  McIlory hit 6 fairways, 9 GIR, and had 25 putts.

Jeff Maggert and John Merrick sat together on the top of the leaderboard after the round at -4.   Maggert teed off in the first group on Thursday, finishing with four birdies, an eagle, and two bogeys on the first seven holes.   John Merrick had the one of his best rounds of the year with six birdies and two bogeys after his disappointing 18th hole dropped him back into a tie with Maggert.

Other notables like Ryder Cup captain Davis Love III, John Daly, and Padraig Harrington finished the day T10 along side McIlroy at -2.
